Shure cartridge question

Hi everyone, I have a Shure N97xE stylus and a Shure M1043 cartridge which I'm not using. Do you think they would work together? It would be to use on a Dual 1229 TT. Thank you, and have a nice day.

Shure M1043? I'm assuming you meant M104E, in which case the answer would be yes - they do fit together. Keep in mind however that 104E is P-Mount cart, where the original M97xE body is 1/2 inch mount. So it will most likely look odd, to say at least. Also, keep in mind that you'll might have to correct VTF, to compensate for N97xE's brush stabilizer. And for that, you need a P-Mount turntable with adjustable VTF counterweight.

If not, I would highly recommend that you stick to original stylus & leave N97xE for some other occasion, other table.

Thx Trekkie4. Yes , you're right. My mistake its a M104E. Thank you
No prob, glad I could help :)

All the carts & their styli form around that era are interchangeable - M92, M94, M97xE, M99, M104, M111, etc. AFAIK, only M94 & M97xE are standard 1/2 mounts however, where all other models are P-Mount, but they DO come with 1/2 mount adapter kit, even the cheapest M92E. So, theoretically you COULD combine just about any combination, as long as you can adjust previously mentioned VTF & AS.

Edit
Your M104E/N97xE combo should look very close (if not similar) to this one, here:

The stylus pictured in the video is not a N97xE, it looks like a after-market N97ED without the stylus brush. Those are not very good and are nothing like the original Shure N97xE or the JICO N97xE.

Hmm, now that you've mentioned it ... you're absolutely correct! Definitely not N97xE, and therefore not compatible with 105E (or any other model) from the series.

Don't remember who told me so (or where I got this information), but the magnets inside other (older) "97" models won't work, only & just "xE" one. So I'm guessing Joe Collins must have used the pic for illustration purposes only, also not realizing the same mistake (especially since he specifically mentioned N97xE in the title, even showed a pic at 2:33)

The magnets aren't the problem, it's the design of the stylus grips that prevents them from being swapped between the old 97 and new. There are some that hack them up but there is no need to when the appropriate replacements are available.

Different styli can have different output voltages. Magnet positioning may be different as well. Mixing and matching can "work" but may not produce the sound that the designers intended.
