Shure M7D

The early Shure literature I have show renderings of the M3D with tubular cantilevers. M7D and M8D are rendered with formed sheet metal cantilevers.

If the M3D did have a sheet metal cantilever, then it would have predated the M7D. This would make sense since Shure would relegate a cartridge or stylus that was improved upon to a lower ranking model. For example, The M3D was totl until the M33. The M33 was totl until the M44, etc., etc., etc.. All of these stayed in production concurrently for some time.

Well I understand that NOS N3D are desirable. I just thought that there might be some generic replacements for the N3D that might not be as desirable - not being "the real thing" so to speak!

And this talk about the tubular and stamped sheet metal. You and Sam seem to not be quite in agreement...

It's difficult to call anything being made today a direct equivalent to a Shure stylus from 50 years ago. I've run the JICO-made EVG on an M3D, and it happily tracks at a level not much heavier than the N21D, despite being labeled as an N3D replacement.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. I, of course knew that malden was advocating the N3D, but I just wasn't sure if he were talking about only getting a cart with an original and to avoid generic replacements (if replacements are out there. I did a quick search on ebay, and I think I saw some.) EDIT: And I'm not talking about a JICO.

Well, I guess it's implied that a generic N3D replacement for the N3D would not be ideal.

Thanks guys, it's really good to know about that JICO so that if I get one of these carts I can get a stylus that would really do the cart justice.
 
Oh really...didn't realize that about the listings.

But where I was getting confused was if a Shure N3D had to be AN ORIGINAL OR NOS to BE the kind of N3D that malden was talking about. IT WOULD SEEM - that an N3D replacement IS ALSO GOOD!!! That is, based on the link that you just put up and yes, what you said in that previous post!!

I have several original Shure styli for the M3D. I've never really felt any need to pull the EVG/JICO off of it and put one of the NOS styli on.

Sam, for the price, I don't mind trying a JICO for my M7. The stock stylus was bent about 45 degrees, and with patience, I got it about 85 or more degrees, nearly straight up and down. It tracks fine, sounds fine, but if you happen to know where I can score a NOS N21D, I would be in your debt. Otherwise, I'll try the JICO. Thanks for your input.

And to my ears, the M7 is a very thick, full-bodied cart. I rather enjoy it.
 
Turntableneedles.com says they can sell me an OEM N3D stylus. Their specs say it tracks at 1.5-2.5g(sounds like the N21D). I've sent them a question about it but anyone know if this is truly an original?

BTW, M7D, aftermarket N3D stylus, on a Garrard Lab 80, through a Heathkit SP2 pre. Heaven.

I bought the needle they sell. From having only 2 grams of anti-skate, it rolled the needle over to the side. I replaced it with the N21D I had straightened. Sounds a little better than the replacement N3D. Not sure why that needle laid over like that. Didn't sound that bad, only slightly less smooth on the top end, was my experience.

BTW, I re-read this thread, and now fully realize that aftermarket N3D's are cool! LOL I realize that I kind of missed part of what Sam said at the end in post #25.

Was this the aftermarket that they sell for $27.95 or what they claim is an OEM for $65.95?
 
Turntableneedles confirmed that they do have original N3D stylus' in stock, but their VTF info was wrong and they're going to correct it. Wonder if it's worth trying an original stylus?
