Shure V15 Type III question???

I have access to a Shure V15 with the following designations -

Shure V15 Type III
Super Tracker Plus

On one side of the cart it says V15 III LM
And on the other side of the cart it says Shure

No where does it tell me what stylus it has.

This is what I have read about the factory available stylus on the V15 III -

Shure V15 III cartridge came with three different stylus.

Spherical - VN35G

Elliptical - VN35 and

Hyper elliptical - HE - VN35HE

Is this accurate and is this the ranking of quality too?

What stylus would be on the cart I have access to?

The LM designation means "low mass". Have generally seen this in conjunction with Dual turntables, sometimes (always?) with mounting that is specific to Dual head shells.

The stylus is replaceable so you can fit any number of replacements from generics to unique SAS profiles.

Doesn't the Shure V15 III LM come in a plastic clip intended for the Dual headshell/sled.

Perhaps I am mistaken......:scratch2:
 
As stated above, LM refers to use on a DUAL turntable and would have an integral tonearm sled.

Regarding the stylus, if U.S. made, it will be one of the following:

VN3G...grey grip (stylus guard will have SUPERTRACK PLUS)
VN35E...black grip (stylus guard will have SUPERTRACK PLUS)
VN35HE...black grip, red label (stylus guard will have VN35HE)
VN35MR...black grip, red label (stylus guard will have VN35MR)

if Mexico made:

VN35E...red grip (stylus guard will have VN35E)
VN35MR...black grip (stylus guard will have VN35MR)

This is an older gentleman and he purchased this cart new and had it installed on his Pioneer PL255 at the shop where he bought the table back in the day. I saw the receipt.

It was suggested as a great cart to him by the audio shop and he took their word for it. It has very low hours on it. He was told that it didn't matter it was intended for a Dual head shell - that it would be a perfect cart for his needs.

So the stylus is which one? Any way to know?

Hi malden,

Sorry I don't know what you mean by grey or black grip but if you mean the body of the cart then this one is black and it does have SuperTrack Plus on the guard so then the stylus would be the VN35E - right?
 
The grip is the plastic you grab hold of to insert or remove the stylus into or from the cartridge.

The stylus guard is the piece of plastic that swings down to protect the stylus.

If your stylus guard has "Super Track Plus" on the front of it, it is either a genuine shure VN35E or somebody put that guard on an aftermarket styus. If you can post a close-up picture of the bottom side of the stylus assembly, there are more than one of us who would be able to tell you if it is a genuine Shure.

Thanks Doug - I know for sure this cart has never left this gentleman's home - so the stylus guard is original and so is the stylus. So it must be a genuine Shure VN35E.

A little blurry but the cantilever looks thin enough to be a genuine Shure. Almost all aftermarket replacements have a thicker one.

The cantilever is the shaft that comes out of the stylus body and has the diamond mounted on the end of it.

That should be an elliptical stylus based on personal experience. I have one just like that but upgraded to the MR.
 
Agree with Audiojones. The cart specfied for DUAL's is the V15III DU. I've got 2 V15's. One is the regular "mount on any head" V15III marked V15III and the one on my 1229 marked V15III DU.

Then this one can't be a Dual specific cart - as stated the only markings on this cart are -

Shure V15 Type III
Super Tracker Plus

On one side of the cart it says V15 III LM
And on the other side of the cart it says Shure

No where does it indicate V15III DU.

I don't know if that was good counsel or not for this table/arm but I know it's a great cart for my Harman Kardon T60c - I already have one on it and it performs wonderfully.
