Hi,

Is it reasonable a Shure V15 Type IV catridge with original but need a new stylus replacement, 80$ includes shipping.

Thanks

Dunno, but I only paid $50 for a Technics SL-1300 w/Shure V15 TypeIV. Turntable was in good condition, & stylus on the Shure looked good under the microscope. Either I got a serious score, or you're paying a premium.

Shure no longer makes a stylus for it, but aftermarket products from suppliers such as Ed Saunders have gotten good reviews. Since the Saunders stylus is also about $80, it could cost you $160 to get a working sample of a non-warrantied cartridge that's over 20 years old. Whether that's a good buy or not depends on how much you'd like the sound. Shure's FAQ database says that the M97xE provides superior performance to the type IV, and it can be had complete for $89 from the Needle Doctor. I find the M97xE a very pleasant performer, but I've never owned a Type IV for comparison.

Hello! Can you please provide me a link to that? I'm very interested in what Shure has to say about this and can't seem to find it on their website.

I've been very curious as to how the M97XE with a Jico SAS stylus would compare to my 30 year old V15VMR. Thanks!

I got one of those, but unfortunately (or fortunately for me, perhaps) it came attached to a GT-2000 turntable, so I have no way of separating out how much I paid for it. What I can confirm is that it is a very nice-sounding MM cart! :music:

Even a year or two ago, the V-15 III was selling for at least $100, and it would probably be more now, since prices on most of these things have been rising. The IV is usually a bit cheaper than the III, making the $80 look "in the ballpark" reasonable. Completed sales on ePay for the past month show one sold for about $65, but it had a damaged-and-repaired cantilever. Another is for sale in an ePay shop for about $160. Overall, I'd say... GET IT! :D

I've been watching ebay cartridge prices over the past few months pretty intently, and $80 is only an "ok" price, and only if you really want the IV right now. If you are open to any type of V15 body, I've seen various bodies go for $30-$50. In fact, I just landed a Type V with a stylus for $52 shipped.

You can definitely do better if you are patient, consistent, and have good timing to land a Buy It Now or snipe. Luck plays a lot into it.

I got mine for $50 attached to a Technics SL-D2. I sold the turntable a few days later for $50:)

Hope that works; it seems kind of long. Once you get to their answers database, you can do a search for the V15 IV. A few of their answers to queries include statements such as, "A nice upgrade from the V15IV without spending too much is the M97xE cartridge."
