Stylus suggestion for my V15 Type IV

for decent low budget google ebay: EVG 772-DE PM3160DE NEEDLE STYLUS for Shure V15 Type IV Type IV VN-45E VN45HE

Try Jico for other options such as the high end SAS. Some people say that the EVG is made by Jico. Not sure myself.

I went with the JICO SAS and haven't looked back. Takes a bit to ship but worth the wait imho. Seems to be lots of discussion on the quality of the "new" Ed Saunders styli. I use an old one on my Type III and like the way it sounds so yeah, that might be worth a shot if so inclined as well.

I agree with bobins08 on the PM3160DE being the budget option. It's decent stylus for the price. I managed to find a NOS Shure VN45HE to compare it to, and the EVG was worth it. if you want the best for your Type IV, go with the Jico SAS, or find a NOS VN45HE on eBay - they pop up occasionally.

With a couple of endorsements for the under $50 PM3160DE, I think that's what I'll go with. Don't know if the rig, the room or my ears are going to validate $150 and up for the nicer stuff. Thanks!

Good starting point. After you get used to hearing the budget stylus you may want to upgrade but before then you can tweak the gear you have, the room, etc.

Its all about the journey.

Here's the thing, though... the current stylus is the stock Shure model. It sounds great but is slightly bent from years of use ( and abuse, probably), which makes tracking hell. Even properly setup, the dang thing finds every opportunity to skip and "loop".
So, it sounds good but performs poorly. I'm worried that the anything below a Jico HE will be a significant downgrade. The room, rig and ears will certainly notice that. Cheapo= $46 Jico HE= $106 Jico SAS= $160, Proper Shure= Fuggedaboudit.

Stupid obsession!

The Voice of Music sells the 4772-DE for $36, the cheapest that I've found. I picked one up a few months back and like it, although I still plan on getting the Jico HE at some point. But I guess you have to prioritize - is it better to just put the money towards one of the higher level aftermarkets? For me, the SAS is out of the question as I don't have that kind of cash and I've heard great things about the HE. I justified the purchase of the 4772-DE aka PM3160DE as something that I could use on less than perfect records. But as a good, relatively inexpensive stylus, I'll third the recommendation.

Jico SAS is the only option. If you cannot afford it, sell cartridge body to someone who can.
Well, that's a pretty autocratic statement. For instance, there are a number of people (and this is not me, because I have never heard the SAS) that say it's a bit on the bright side, very finicky to set up, and really needs to be reserved for LPs that are in meticulous condition. I'm sure that following these conditions and mated to a proper arm, it's does indeed sound fantastic, but we don't know how the OP plans to use the cartridge, let alone what turntable it will be used on. He was looking at a BUDGET option, and we're only offering suggestions. To categorically state that there aren't any other options (particularly the LP Gear stylus mentioned in post 5) is disingenuous.

I have a V15 type IV and use an elliptical stylus, an EVG, from Carol on it. I found it to be worthy and enjoyed sound it produces. VOM sells this same stylus for less and I can recommend it.

Some time after an online seller of styli went out of business. Many here who remember GAR may well remember that after announcing their leaving the business they held terrific deals on styli and I did buy quite a batch. One of these was I thought a backup elliptical for my IV. When I looked closely at the box it was labeled HE. Bonus! I immediately tried it and wow!! The depth and detail revealed was, to my ears, stunning. I didn't find it at all harsh or shrill but very much in the vein of Shure and with much more mid and high end clarity producing a very 3 dimensional sound.

Recently I tried the elliptical again wand still greatly enjoyed it. Indeed I'm thankful to have both. What you get will obviously depend on your budget but you will be pleased no matter the choice, I'm sure.

I wound up with a 4772-DE from Voice of Music, installed it tonight. Brilliant, could not be happier for $40. I'm listening to Songs in the Key of Life out of the gate and it sounds perfect. Thanks for all the suggestions.
