V15 IV Replacement Stylus

I wiped out my very expensive Jico Sas stylus on my Shure V15 IV Cart. Im looking to replace it with an EVG stylus or anything that is under $75.00. I cant afford another Jico Sas at the moment. On my other TT a Technics SL QD 33 I used an EVG stylus on my P Mount RXT5, and it really sounded super. So basically id like to know if this EVG is decent for my Shure V15 or any low cost suggestions would be appreciated.

I hear ya,

I'll just say this, a V15 type lV with an inferior stylus and ineffective stabilizing brush will be no better than a new cartridge in your price range. For under $75.00 I would suggest a Shure M35X.

I bought my first V15 (type lll) cartridge in 1980 and continued on a upgrade path with the V15 type lV.....V15 type V.....V15 type V MR. I had been using cheap after-market styli untill I found JICO and have not looked back.

Hey Malden, based on listening experiences, which V15 is your preference?

V15 type lV with the JICO VN45HE is the best cartridge/stylus I currently have. It sounds better to me than my V15 type V with original stylus. My V15 type lll also has the original stylus but it's simply too compliant for my Thorens TD 160 tone-arm. The stabilizing brush of the JICO VN45HE works wonders on a medium mass tone-arm.

Very good info ... I am using a V15-III with VN35E stylus on my AR XB with great results. It is still breaking in, I have about 7 hours on it (yes, I am keeping track).

I will put the V15-III with VN35E stylus on my TD 160 with SME 3009 Series II (improved) tone arm after the arm is rewired. I suspect this will be the optimum configuration for the VN35E.

The SME 3009 is a tone-arm that I've been wanting for a while. That may be where my V15 type lll lives.

Have you thought about an retip outside of the Jico money? Why not put on a line trace diamond. It is more expensive than a new stylus but you'll have a great stylus for a long time. Cost is twice your price range but worth it. You'll keep everything else within the stylus and have a new diamond.

Im looking at an EVG stylus on flea bay for $45 bucks. I recently purchased an EVG for my PMount Cart few months back for my RXT5 cart from this seller and it really sounded awesome. So im gonna give this a shot. Ps Thanks for that info anyways.

There's lots of options out there:

I'd certainly endorse Needlestein's recommendation of thevoiceofmusic.

I've had very good luck with turntableneedles service:

JICO elliptical here for $45: https://www.turntableneedles.com/VN...5-Type-IV--our-Needle-772-DE-copy_p_4243.html
Hyperelliptical for $110: https://www.turntableneedles.com/VN...5-Type-4--our-Needle-772-DHE-copy_p_1421.html

Those have free shipping (to US) and customer rewards points you can use later down the road.

Many swear by the Vivid Lines from LPGear:
LP Gear Vividline for $125: https://www.lpgear.com/product/SHSV15IV.html

I of course have never tried Needle Daddy as he wusses-out and won't ship outside of the US.

Well that Jico / EVG relationship always sparks a bit of a debate. There's a thread over on vinylengine, back from 2011, reporting a response from Russell Industries regarding the source of EVG and they indicated that Jico was one of the suppliers making product for them. It's certainly not the exact same stylus that one purchases from Jico ... highly unlikely that there will be any tension wire on it. But in terms of a replacement stylus, the EVG product is good for the $ spent and far, far less of a crap-shoot than pfanstiehl. I've never had an issue with EVG.

You're welcome.

There are only 2 sources of JICO styli that were built like those originally supplied with Shure cartridges, that is JICO's website and EMJ. All others I've seen are inferior in terms of build quality. I'm only commenting on what I can see with a 4x jeweler's loupe. Shure built quality styli, especially those that were manufactured in the USA. I have a couple of dozen examples.

The JICO styli I have sound just as good as the originals, in some cases, like the SC35C, even better than the current oem stylus supplied with it.
