Simple crossover for 3-way

Inside of cabs. I do not know why they only put insulation on two of the four sides and the inside of the back. Weird.

Nah, it's actually all you need. When you're lining the walls you're trying to break up standing waves. You don't have to break up each time the sound bounces, only one. Think of it as balls bouncing around in there. To keep them from bouncing back and forth between the sides you just have to make one side soft.

I know that a first order Butterworth has a 6 db rolloff, but this isn't a Butterworth because it has no inductors, ain't that right?

You're right that a first order filter is 6dB/octave and that's what Wiggy has. However, the Butterworth has to do with the shape of the filter. For a first order, Butterworth is the only shape there is. When you add an inductor you have a 2nd order filter. The Butterworth shape will depend on the relationship between the cap and coil so that it is maximally flat.

Are you saying the 4 uf cap is ONLY there to keep midrange out of the tweeter, and the mid and tweeter are both playing 5000 hz and up equally?

Yeah, that's it. The mid will roll off naturally (mechanically) on the high end, and also due to voice coil inductance, a first order low pass. Setting things up so that the natural roll off of the mid matches the low pass on the tweeter can be tough.

Wiggy, let me dig about in the stash here and see if I have a couple of fresh caps for you to try in there once you get the cabs sorted out. I think I probably have some polys or worst case, fresh electrolytics you could swap in.

Not to worry, buddy, I'm actually all set. I bought some extra the last time I did a recap, and I checked - I have 4 and 8 uf caps ready to go. Thank you, though!

Thanks! That makes sense. Never thought of it that way.

Okay then, I learned some schtuff here. For one, I'm not a crossover expert just because I stayed at a Holiday Inn. :nono: :D

lol i didnt mean to be rude in my post mr. toxcrusadr! hope u didnt take it that way. I had a pair of speakers wired similar to the OPs. I had to google stuff for about a week to figure out why and how it worked. i for sure am not any expert on the matter

but the two caps are individually wired in series to their respective drivers, they arent connected. the midrange driver im sure is naturally (mechanically) rolled off at the 5000hz freq. No inductors are necessary

i meant to say.. the midrange is naturally or mechanically rolled off at 2500hz.
the upper hi-freq limits of that driver.
