Single Ended 6V6?

specialidiot

Break Glass, Smoke Lucky
Hi gang.... I've been pretty happy with my current range of setups... on the solid state (gasp!) side I have a Yamaha B2 and the Pass F5 I built. Tube amps are Redboy built Single ended 45 and a Jaymanna hot-rodded Eico HF-81. All are absolutely wonderful, work perfectly, etc.

I also have a few guitar amps and by far I prefer the Fender Champ style 6V6 SE. I also have a converted 6L6 SE that is pretty sweet too. I really don't love (but I do like) EL84/6BQ5 in a guitar amp - way to sterile for my tastes.

One thing I don't think I've seen is a SE 6V6 for audio use?

What's out there? I'd even be interested in building something.... First time in years I've had the urge to light up an iron!

Jeff,

Look into the Magnavox 196AA...this is a SE 6BQ5 stereo amp, and if memory serves, they also made it in 6V6 SE stereo format as well.

I know of an example of a SE 6v6 amp for sale or trade up on CAM. Looks good but I wanted to stick with my 6BQ5 amps. (Think I'm hooked).

I'm not sure if it's kosher to post a link to another forum, so PM me if you want the link.

I've never gotten a 6V6 job to sound as good as the tube looks on paper, but I did use some single ended maggie 6V6s for the high end of a biamped horn rig. I made some little adapters so I could use 6AQ5s as a drop in too. I won't say which I liked better.:D Maybe I'm biased (ha), but 6V6 to me says guitar amp. Of course I said the same thing once about the 6L6 and man was I wrong on that when I heard my first HK250. :dunno:

6V6 triode connected is ok with the right (I emphasize right) 6V6. 2 watts output is a little slim. PP triode 6V6 is 6 watts.

Douglas' (Pakprotector's) wife's first tube project was a 6V6 job, and of course with Pak doing the design work, it had more iron in it than a German bunker. I never got to hear it, but the reviews were ALL VERY good. You might ask Keg about it, if you get lucky there may be a napkin schematic somewhere.:thmbsp:

Where the hell is Pak anyhow?

se

My opinion of se is: half as much amp for twice the price.

Ha, Ha. The joke is on the gullible who get suckered into se.
They praise the sound....Another misconception. se was the standard for many years before PP was generalized. Why do you think the PP was invented?

More power, lower distortion, generally more better.

I have heard se and asked when the magic was supposed to start.
Oh maybe running in class a may have a benefit but I can't see it.

Paul

His wife built a tube amp?

Yeh, he helped her some of course.

As far the SET versus PP talk, it's all in the ears, and last time I looked at my scope it didn't have any.:D Seriously though, if I was looking for low distortion numbers I'd turn on a SS rig.

If you do not think SE or 6v6 can sound good I beg you to build the amp I posted.. You WILL be surprised.. Granted you need very sensitive speakers.. I use mine on a large horn system and 1w is plenty.. But flee power isn't for everyone some people just don't like it..

Sorry, 5ka-a @40% is what I have. To find outputs at 20%, you would either search or pay bigger money. Heck, IIRC even standard fare from Hashimoto comes with 40.

Dynaco ST-35 with Z565 transformers uses 20% taps. You see the industry back in the day knew 40% taps was not best sounding for EL84 & 6V6. And, Hashimoto is not the industry standard regarding the correct UL taps for EL84 and 6V6.

You can also try tetrode for best sonics too. Or, use 6L6 in lower voltage design with 40% taps.

Too bad they don't give you some options. How hard can it be to hook on a couple extra wires ya know. Maybe 20, 30, and 40%.
