I think it is mostly waste of resources which coulld be used on something more productive like designing safer nuclear power plants. By the time when this thing goes to service, most potential enemies will have mobile air defence capabilities to hit it. Just one of them brought down will likely result in groundng of all fleet forever.

Well, the issue is that we are ordering fewer and fewer planes, ships, etc....Doesn't anyone see a future when numbers will be too low for any sustained action?
I would have loved to see the Boeing Comanche Helicopter get made...that is something that supports the troops on the ground, which is what you really win wars with.
Rebel forces and other countries which don't have the buying power that we have, would be use up their resources if we had more quantities. Modern isn't always better...The marriage of resources like AWACS and Satellites means that the tactics are what reign supreme, above the individual capabilities of the aircraft.

Well, outside or inside...close support by chopper, antitank duties, recon, whatever it may be, is critical. We do have alliances to honor.

Alliances should only be honored when they work in your interest, otherwise they should be dumped. I'm hard pressed to think of any allies we have who can be nearly as much help to us as we are to them.
A study of the beginning of the Great War shows the dangers of honoring alliances when honoring them runs counter to your own interests. Alliances must be considered carefully, pragmatically and cynically.

I used to live a couple miles from the main gate at Beal AFB. You could tell when one of the old SR-71's was getting ready to fly when the twin Wildcat V8 engines with straight headers fired up. One hell of a starter motor! I got to look into the cockpit of one during a high school field trip. Getting to talk with one of the pilots was the best part.
