SMAC November 2010

Got a surprise for you guys who come to the SMAC meet. A good friend of mine is hoping to attend - no promises, but he'll try. He was the bass player for a local Detroit band called The Jagged Edge back in the late '60s and early '70s; they opened at the Grandee for all kinds of bands like Pink Floyd and MC5 and Iggy Pop and so on. He lives just down the street from me. He gave me a couple couches for the basement, and when he was eyeballing my stereo gear, he said "Hey, want a McIntosh?" After I finished picking up my chin from the floor, I said YES! We went to get it; it was stuck away in a back closet of his house, it's kind of grungy and some of the black switches have turned whitish (?). It's a McIntosh MA-5100. I have no knowledge of this unit, I know nothing of Macs. This any good?

Anyway, that's the story. Hope to see you guys at the SMAC meet this Saturday.

Stone Soup is the perfect analogy.

I'll bring my Sony TAN-5550, a 50 wpc Vfet and its preamp, a Sony TAE-5450. I've always wanted to hear the Vfet head-to-head with some tube amps and have never had the chance.

Probably bring some speakers as well.

Looking forward to it.

Don't forget...

SMAC November is THIS Saturday. Also don't forget to bring some favorite music to share with the group - we'll alot some time so that members may present their tunes to the group.

Hope to see you there!

Wow, hell of a friend! As I started reading this I was thinking you were going to say we would have entertainment. But this is much better. If it hasn't been used in a while don't plug it in! I can bring you my poor mans vari-ac. Let one of our amp gods check it out on Saturday.

Cool, thanks! However, I uh...already plugged it in. One channel has a lot of noise. I'm a bad man, I know I shouldn't have done that.

You should be alright as it is a solid state unit. So long as you didn't see the magic smoke :smoke:. They were made for 1966-1972 with a msrp of 449.99. 45w X 4 integrated amplifier. Did you download a service manual yet??!! I can't wait to see it!

I did, but I do not have a printer. I hope you'll enjoy the unit; also Mrs. Wiggy is putting out quite the banquet. Come hungry!

I've been attempting to clear some stuff here an get ready for Ebay, I rebuilt one
of the Dynaco PAS-3 preamps here recently, and I'll bring that as well so we have
a phono stage along with another tube preamp to use.
