first time in many years I have a dedicated stereo system again. Not the sexiest but it was very cheap and works for now. All of what I bought I got thru my moms' cousin (whatever that makes him to me). He has owned "the local record shop" in the area for like, I don't know, 30 years now? It's called Groamy's. I spend too much time in there and it makes me spend money.
The turntable? I very happy with it, esp for the money I have in it. Technics 1700. mark one. Got it for 100 bucks from the cousins' shop. Nothing special Audio Technica cart. It had a slight over speed issue. After taking it apart cleaning with the trusty deoxIT. Runs great now, other than I think the anti-skate isn't 100 percent.
I was running it thru my Yamaha home theater receiver with a cheap pre-amp. For what it was though it wasn't bad sounding honestly.
Well, this week I had a couple of things fall my way.
First was 4 Optimus STS-1230's... 100 Watts RMS Maximum 200 Watts 8 Ohms 12-Inch Woofer 4 Inch Midrange 1-Inch Tweeter 50-20,000 Hz. They were originally sold for surround systems if I'm correct. If I came across them in a shop I probably wouldn't have given them a second look, but they came to me free given to me by my brother in law. Free adds value right? Free things sound better. So I had a set of speakers. Two sets actually.
Then when I randomly went into Groamys today to take a break from shopping for tires for my car. After looking around a while I saw a Kenwood receiver. Not generally a brand I look for. Not saying I dislike Kenwood just was never on my radar. Anyways I ramble.. So he had a KA-88 sitting there. (120 watts per channel 8Ω) Frequency response: 10Hz to 70kHz distortion: 0.004%. I might be a bit newer to home audio is that an uncommon freq?
So I listened to it did some quick research on its specs. He had it on consignment. It cost me 50 bucks. One thing it had that helped me was an equalizer on the front of it. Something I was looking for at the moment. Sadly for some reason, I don't have any eq's in my pro audio equipment. Think I sold off my last one.
Overall I'm pretty happy for the moment. It gives me something to play with. Also, something to use while I theory craft a more umm high fi system, and then root out pieces for it. All in all, I have 150 bucks in this system. At Christmas time when I buying gifts for people and while I'm not spending extra money cause I have to buy new tires tomorrow. The turntable I bought a couple of months ago.
I can't really give in-depth thoughts on the sound of the system. Other than the mids and highs of the Optimus speakers surprised me. Strong pretty clean overall good. Lows eh. I might have a tainted ear. I had an extra older JVC HTIB receiver laying around that I had the speakers hooked up to and it didn't give them anything under 80hz due to the crossover in that receiver. I've only had the Kenwood hooked up for an hour or so. I haven't got much time listening to it. I will give more thoughts on that later.
so yea there it is. Oh yea, I have the turntable sitting on an extra amp I'm not using for the moment. To add some weight to cancel out slightly bouncy floors.
