So, I . . . Ummm . . . Bought a Patrician

I did not know it was going to be so big. It's still in the truck. I'm going to have to take it to work and unload it there with the fork lift and leave it until I figure out what to do with it.

No pictures yet, I'll get some when I get it unloaded. I don't know much about it other than it was owned by a jazz musician. There is a piece of plywood over the woofer. The cabinet is overall in pretty good shape but has some wear in places.

Did I mention it's huge? It's huge. I didn't know it was going to be so big. I'm still kind of flabbergasted.

I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of questions as soon as I can get it somewhere and get a look at it.

Well, I do have a picture of the grill, which rode in the cab of the truck with me. So here's a teaser:

Does that thing have the 30" woofer?

I don't know. I am not at all familiar with them, so when I saw the piece of plywood, I thought that maybe a driver was missing. So I had the seller pull the plywood, there's a honking big woofer in there with a red EV on the dust cap. There was wood blocking the edges of the woofer, so it was hard to get a good idea of the size. Once I confirmed there was actually a driver in it, he sealed it back up. So, I don't know if it was an 18" or a 30", though I suspect it's an 18".

I was kind of overwhelmed looking it all over and probably should have paid a bit more attention to some of the details.

Would make a nice mono system! Great find!

That's kind of the plan, pending approval from a disapproving war department.

I should mention that I got it for less than many people pay for mid-fi receivers. I've spent more on dinner for me, my wife, and my daughter.

Love the grill! So how tall are these? Looking forward to more pics!

It is around five feet, four inches. I can't wait to hook it up to something.

Sell your house and move into a bigger one.

I floated that idea, but it didn't go far. I'm going to keep working on getting it in the house. It's just too cool to let it go.

Your speaker could cover an entire episode of tiny house nation.

You ain't kidding. I've never encountered a speaker like this, and it just looks so gargantuan compared to other speakers.

I also got around 500 jazz 78s, 50 or so military 16" records, and ten or so reel tapes on 10" Scotch metal take-up reels. It's been a good day!

Well, I just got it unloaded. Went surprisingly well, just sliding it out of the back of the truck onto a skid on the fork lift. I'll have to wait until after work to get some pictures, but they are forthcoming.

Did I mention that it's huge?

385 lb? I knew they were big but...that beats the Klipschorn for sheer mass!

What you gonna do with all those records and tapes? I bet those 16" transcriptions have some interesting stuff - there could be Anything in there!

I've only scratched the surface of the 78s. Mostly big band pop, but it's all in really good shape. There's likely going to be some gems in there. One tub that I thought was 78s turned out to be mostly mint 45s from the big band era, including a number with picture sleeves, from artists like Ella and Benny Goodman. There was also more recorded 7" reels, mostly unlabeled, though at least one is labeled as Ella Fitzgerald, and one is a recording of what I presume is the previous owner and friends playing on the porch of a local landmark hotel. On top of that, there were cassettes of recordings of the former owner's music, including practice sessions, and a cassette labeled "The Highlands Quintet—Bristol Moose Club—October 1955." I can't wait to listen to all of this.

So far, one of the biggest gems for me is some, I don't know what you call them, home-recorded records, like an audio message. Most are unlabeled, but one is from Private Sloop Powell in St. Louis, Missouri. Side one is from 1942, and side two is from 1943. It's likely just a "hello family" type thing, but I am jazzed to have it.

The military records have USMC labels and appear to be radio shows. I really just gave a cursory glance over most of it last night. It will take me a while to dig through all of it. Oh, and I have to procure a reel-to-reel so I can listen to all the reels.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I have always wanted to find some of those transcription records - recorded direct off the air - or in this case they are probably shows distributed to bases and radio stations to play for the troops. You need a big ol TT to play a 16"er.
