I’ve got some RTR EXP-12’s I’ve been using for a while and I’m looking to go through them and change stuff up.
The woofers aren’t original (shame), they’ve got a QTS of 0.33 and are JBL LC S1200w woofers. I’m a little sad they aren’t the original Alnicos with a 2” VC but oh well. They’re car subwoofers, they’ve done the job but I’ve realized after some time the speakers are a bit off. Some tunes they sound great on, others… not so much.
Can I expect good performance out of these even if the woofers are car subwoofers? The speakers don’t sound, bad, quite good in some circumstances and poor in others. At least they can perform in a sealed enclosure. The frequency response of the woofer is about 40-500 hz, the original crossover frequency was at about 1234hz. I now realize why there’s a big hole in the mid bass.
So. What’re my options here? Do I ditch the woofers and leave them for some other project, and pick up ones that actually do the job? Or can I switch out the aging tweeters for something that can somehow work with a subwoofer? I heard of a guy who gave his EXP-12 horns, could I do something like that? The crossover is also completely original, so I reckon most of that will have to go.
and before you ask how much I paid, $100, I know research yadda yadda I saw JBL and my brain touched two neurons together, what can I say. I’m an idiot who has too much time on his hands, give me some suggestions.
