I never had a reel to reel before so it’s an exploration in sound for me. Had I not picked up a quadrophonic receiver for $100, this would not have happened. I ended up fixing the tape monitor input by soldering in a new one and felt obligated at that point to give it a try. It’s like this receiver (Pioneer QX-646) was made for a four channel tape player.
20 years from now these machines will hardly exist. The maintenance involved on a routine basis as well as any type of major repair (like the heads) will eliminate pretty much all future generations. The turntable will survive, as well as vinyl, but tape players will continue a decline.
I still have my dad’s Lionel set from the early ‘40s, so who knows, maybe interest will pick up again for nostalgic reasons. The guy that repaired my Lionel 10 years ago (Dave the Train Man) made a career out of repairing these trains. He said it was designed to be a toy and look how far it has gone. They don’t make stuff like they used to.
