First time poster and builder! I've recently been learning about speaker repair and building and have a couple small repairs I am tinkering with to get a feel for it.
I have a pair of Soma SE 1500C, that seem to struggle with my HK 670. There is some damage to the cones. I've stripped the cabinets bare and would like to rebuild the speaker from the ground up.
The two main reasons I've taken up the hobby are (1) quality vintage stereo equipment is becoming ever more expensive, (2) I need a productive hobby.
I've recently picked up PSB Century 500i's and would like to complement them, but also provide a bit more low end - deeper bass.
Speakers to compliment:
Harmon Kardon HK670 1978 receiver
PSB Century 500i speakers.
Cabinet Size:
14" wide x 11.5" deep x 26" height
Speaker cut outs:
12" woofer
5" midrange
3" tweeter
I've also read there are some software/programs that can help balance you 3 ways with proper capacitors, any information would help on this.
Other considerations and questions:
1. I'd like to keep the cost down, but dont want to limit my project. I.e. 12" max would be $200/ea but would prefer $100 range.
2. Looking preferably nice vintage woofers/midrange/tweeters but open to all suggestions.
3. The cabinet has a vinyl overlay on plywood, do I have any cosmetic options?
4. Would you recommend recapping the PSB's? Cabinet appears in original sphere.
5. Recommended insulation?
If I've missed anything, feel free to help.
I appreciate any responses, and look forward to learning and under taking a new hobby.
Thanks guys and gals!
