In case it's helpful to anyone... I've been trying to replace a 242-2731 Braun tweeter in a first-gen ADS L710. I've seen it mentioned here that if these units show a DC resistance reading then they're probably fine, but not so in the case of the two I have bought off of eBay so far. I tried sending to Richard So but he wouldn't take it as he was heading out on vacation soon.
1. Original measured infinite (open circuit), no output (no fuse or poly-switch in this model)
2. The first eBay replacement (an original 242-2731) was advertised as measuring 4.9 OHM but actually measured 2.2 OHM and was barely(!) audible. Fun fact: the seller accused me of breaking it, and then of returning a different part in order to avoid refunding me, going so far as to submit photos of an altogether different 242-2731 tweeter that I supposedly returned to him.
3. The next eBay replacement, a 206-0116 (ADS replacement for the 242-2731) measured a healthy 4.6 OHM but the output was less than half as loud as my one working 242-2731.
4. Next step is likely to wait until August when RS is back from vacation and I can get my original rebuilt, because even if one pops up online, I have no way of knowing whether it will sound right.
I was sure to use the same speaker cabinet for comparing the tweeters, just to rule out anything in the circuit of the other cabinet.
Mean time I replaced the 100/100 caps with a (giant!) polypropylene model and reflowed a couple solder connections on the XO boards.
So far the moral of the story is to just get them rebuilt, instead of messing with the used market. And just know that if RS rebuilds a pair, he switches the domes to the smooth black, but if he does a single unit, you'll keep the sticky dome.
