Somebody asked ?

I'm about to paint my SL 1600 MK2 TT and know it wont be the gray/silver that's on it now......maybe I'll think bigger! Thanks for the ideas! I figure that for pieces I know I'll be keeping a long time, what the hell, make 'em the way ya like 'em! I've refinished several wood cabinet/bonnets for my stuff and a long time ago said bye bye to Watco and others -- happier for it and the quality is enhanced!

I borrowed all those pieces to see what difference the colors made in their sound. Here are the results of the ones I have tested so far:

The (bright) red one: The sound was hot...passionate.
The black one: Somber, moody....a very dark sound.
The chrome one: A very bright, edgy sound. Almost brittle.
The yellow one: Plain, dull...the music just kind of blended into the background.

Who'd of thought that just paint would make that much difference?! Hmmmmmmmm....maybe I will try each with different colored cables next!

(just kidding, guys.)

Very cool. Nice work. My Marantz receiver sits in a cabinent, in a closet in my bedroom system, so these nice looking units would be a waste because they'd never be seen. If I owned one of these, they'd have to be displayed out in the open somewhere.

You may be kidding, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if appearances had a profound psycho effect on sound impressions.

On another note. I would NEVER paint a Marantz case like that. That's just not right at all. A little splash of color or stripes or something on the faceplate and knobs probably wouldn't hurt though.

Cool! I like it!
How about bass boat paint? like big flake in candy over silver?
:P you know like sparkly drum kits....

I realize this a super old thread. But what black paint did you use? Looks good!

You can use any premium brand spray paint but you've got to treat it like an automotive finish. I.E. multiple coats with plenty of sanding with finer and finer grades of sandpaper. Once you get around 800 grit or so you should start wet sanding. I did my Technics TT and went all the way up to 2000 grit. The satin black paint I used ended up looking like semi-gloss.

That said, the gloss black looks nice. I have a few Sony ES components with wood side panels and I think that gloss black on the metal tops would look nice.

That looks really good. What do you suggest as far as prepping it? Did you use any kind of paint stripper?

You can use paint stripper but I just sanded the original paint off and laid down a couple of good coats of primer. Know that it's not a quick process. I give the paint at least two days to dry & get hard. Starting with primer then to paint. Lay down two coats, sand, paint, wait two days and repeat. Climbing up two grits with each step. Of course you can just spray on a couple of coats and be done with it but if you want that finish that wow's you every time you see it, it takes work. This started as an ordinary battleship grey Technics.

Looks amazing. The Marantz cover is metal with a faux vainer I think?? I may just wipe it down real good and start with primer.

I thought it would go quickly but my OCD kicked in and I kept thinking "It's not smooth enough, it's not smooth enough". It became "If it's worth doing it's worth overdoing"

I would look into powder coating. We have wheel refinishers we use at my dealership who quoted around $100 to coat my SL1800mk2 in semi gloss black. They refinish wheels worth multiple thousands of dollars for us and they come out perfectly.

I didn't think of that!

Love that look. Did you have any issue with reapplying the decals? They used to sell case tops for these in different colors that you would just put over the original case.

The decal wasn't too hard. To get it right I had to use tweezers so no oils from my fingers would get on there. Up close you can still see it's a decal tho'.

I have one of those tops. I'll probably paint it black and put it on BT.
