My best friend used to have a cat like this. The first time I met him (the cat), he kept meowing at me from the downstairs bathroom door. Alan told me to let him in and turn the faucet on at a healthy trickle. This I got since I had a cat that lapped falling water from a running faucet, so I did as instructed. His cat immediately jumped up and then proceeded to stick his head directly under the water stream like the guy in the video, allowing the water to flow between his eyes, over his nose, and onto his tongue. Damnest thing I ever saw until another friend showed me his cat that would jump in the shower with him and bathe every day. All my cats act like water is acid on their skin.

I want that cat, too. Looks something like my 16 pounder but the head under the water thing is hilarious.
My cat drinks a LOT of water, not sure because of his size or what but he will drink for several minutes at a time more than once a day. He figured out where water comes from (the tap) and then determined that it was our job to make it easier for him to drink from there. He jumps up on the bathroom counter and waits for my wife or me to cup our hands under the faucet, and will then drink from there.
If you don't cup your hands but turn the water on for him, he puts his head sideways and slurps from the water stream just like we've all done as kids. Must mean he's smarter than this cat in the video, he stays dry anyway.
The other two younger cats of course adopted his behavior although the other male has since stopped joining the group. It's pretty funny having two or three of them lined up around the sink drinking simultaneously though.
I'll have to get a video and post it one of these days...

My cat drinks a LOT of water, not sure because of his size or what but he will drink for several minutes at a time more than once a day. My younger cat has the weirdest drinking behavior ever - she sticks her foot in the water bowl and licks the water off. She doesn't lap it up unless she's really thirsty, then she gets water everywhere.

OK.. So I'll divulge my cat's drinking strangeness...
She never has liked a bowl, but loves to drink from the faucet. I'll turn it on to let it trickle, and she does the sideways head deal.
I got her one of those water fountain bowls, but she didn't like it because after a day it just wasn't fresh enough I guess. I got tired of emptying it and refilling it constantly.
So now her bowl is a plastic cup on the dresser, just outside my bath. She will jump up and rub her face on the cup, telling me she likes her bowl, but it's not fresh.. CHANGE IT!!!... so I'll empty it out and refill it.
THen she can't just stick her face in it, until she has dipped her paw in it a few times, and licked the water off her paw. Only then can she stick her face in the cup and get a nice long drink....

3 of our 4 have a yen for "sink drink", too. (Toby, the newest, is still too little to make the big leap.) They'll go in the bathroom & give you the kitty stare until you run some water in the sink & , sproing, they're up there lapping away. I speculate that it's some deep-seated regression to a wild state & drinking from a puddle. I dunno...they're endlessly fascinating creatures. Another habit they've forced us into is a source of water on the nightstand. My wife left a small glass of water there once...they discovered it & now we HAVE to have an old coffee cup sitting there with water should they get the whim for a drink.

Water that sits for a while will collect dust, and if it has old saliva or other organic impurities in it, may have elevated levels of bacteria. A may sense that, and reject it, the same way we might reject water that was muddy or tasted rusty, etc...
A cat putting its paw in and licking off the paw, isn't much different from a human sticking a finger in something and then licking off the finger, to "taste-test" it.
Water flowing from the tap also has much higher levels of oxygen in it, as it is passing through the air and is full of bubbles.
Put it this way: would you rather drink from a flowing stream, or from a stagnant pond?
Those cats may be clumsy in their drinking styles, but they aren't so stupid about drinking what is healthful for them!
Another thought: Cats frequently lick ("preen") themselves, running their tongues over their fur. There may be multiple reasons for this, and perhaps that cat in the video is deriving some secondary benefit from the feeling of the water running over its head, besides the inefficient "drinking" it enables? After all, the head is one area where the cat cannot reach with its tongue, so it is one area where a substitute "licking" might be welcomed(?!). Again, maybe the cat is not at all as stupid as we might assume at first glance.

Yeah, the diabetes thing was a concern both because of all the drinking and because of his weight. However, there's no indication of diabetes, and the weight seems pretty natural for this guy. He's just a big freaking cat, not fat or flabby. His head is huge and so is the rest of him... paws look more like a dog than a cat, almost. He's been big since right after we got him, and he's not even 2 years old.
Funny though, we've adopted three of them and ended up with a very petite female that's just over 10 lbs., the 16.5 lb. big guy, and another male that's in the middle at 12-13 lbs but think's he's in charge of the other two. The little one is like a Chinese acrobat, incredibly quick and agile. The big guy is agile in his own way but it's more like watching a Bengal tiger or puma vs. the ferret-like agility of the little one. Quite a range of sizes and behaviors in this bunch, more variety than the family of 5 we had years ago but I guess that's not so unusual with them all being adopted and unrelated.

We used to have an orange tabby that would love to jump in the shower with me in the morning. He had no problems with getting soaking wet. A great cat he was.
