Sometimes being a nice guy is a drag

krowmagnum

Compulsive speaker freak
I was looking at a pair of SP-5000x's I found on CL and this young 20-something couple had a really nice 9090 receiver running the old speakers.

Her dad bought the stereo in the military overseas and she had no idea what it was worth. These kids are overextended and desperate for money to pay their mortgage so I told her what the 9090 was worth. She was shocked that it's worth $200-300 and I told her she shouldn't take less than $200 for it.

I could have bought the 9090 pretty cheap but I was feeling kinda sorry for these poor kids trying to stay afloat by selling everything they own. I couldn't just offer them $50 for it without feeling bad about it. I usually don't have a problem buying gear for less than it's value but this time was different.

And I don't need another receiver but that 9090 would be nice to have for sure. I did buy the speakers for what they are worth and said good luck.

Sometimes it's tough being a nice guy. Or maybe I'm just getting old and senile...

Just hope you don't find out they sold it for $50.00 later on ......

I did my best to make sure that wouldn't happen. And I left my number just in case she wants to find a good home for it. I told her I couldn't afford to pay the ePrice for it so if I hear from her great, if not that's ok too.

Thanks to everyone for all the positive reinforcement.

you did the right thing!

I have tried to do that for people that have given me very nice things, and sometimes I lose a score, but I feel better about myself.

I did that for a older couple with a Teac and a Akai R&R excellent in the original boxes they had no idea and wanted 50.00 for the pair,i told them to take no less then 100.00 each and about a week later i saw maybe by chance the two R&R's for 200.00 each in the paper by another seller, i hope they got there money.

Standing O for krow...they didn't have a G9000 they were looking to unload did they? Just kidding.
BTW I feel gear acquired by anyone serving in Viet Nam is somewhat sacrosanct and I'd be pleased to acquire it and give it a good home...as it so righteously derseves.Especially when that gear belonged to the sellers Dad.Hard to believe she would sell it...but then again I'm somewhat like a shadow on that topic.Always right there.

As everyone so far has said, you did the right thing. You should feel GOOD about what you did. To have tried to squeeze the best bargain out of people in their situation would have been tantamount to commiting the proverbial sin of "kicking a good man when he is down". You acted according to your conscience, and your decision was a caring, morally right one. Be glad you decided to do this! Feel confident that Karma will ensure that you will be rewarded, sooner or later. You'll get an even better deal, and one that you can be really happy about, because it won't be done to the detriment of some poor sole(s) struggling to make ends meet.

There are so many people trying to screw each other out there already. If doing the right thing means getting old and senile I am right there with you. It all comes back around eventually, well done!
