Songs That Sound Like Other Songs

Side 2 of Karn Evil 9, the piano instrumental part when Emerson is really grooving sounds exactly like a piece that McCoy Tyner plays on Coltrane's "A Love Supreme". It's too close to be coincidence.

I've discovered a few of these in my travels. I'll start with:

Minglewood Band - Dorchester sounds like Velvet Underground - Oh! Sweet Nuthin'

Bob Dylan's - 4th Time Around sounds like The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)

The generic metal background music on just about every car, motorcycle, high performance, truck driver, chainsaw, type show on cable.

Here's one I noticed the first time I heard it in 1968. The bridge in "Chewy Chewy" by The Ohio Express is taken directly from the opening riff to "Then He Kissed Me" by The Crystals.

George Harrison was sued for lifting the melody for "My Sweet Lord" from The Chiffons' "He's So Fine."

The Beach Boys "Surfin' USA" deliberately mirrored Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little 16." Berry eventually received a writer's credit.

Here's a great example why some songs sound like others... Basically how to reproduce Smack My Bitch Up by Prodigy, and what old blues, motown and other similar songs they took the samples from, and how they manipulated them...

A very common thing they do any more...

The Velvet Underground's "There She Goes Again" -- they copped the opening bit (which is repeated in both songs) off of Marvin Gaye's "Hitch Hike." But it's an artistically brilliant act of theft, so it's okay IMO.

"This isn't plagiarism, it's kleptomania." --Igor Stravinsky (attrib.)

Um.. Yeah.. wow.. I didn't notice that.... I was just looking for that one clip I've seen before.. never saw those related like that before..

Weird, I just noticed a couple of songs like that yesterday then saw this post:

Crash and Burn (Pat Travers) and The Beat Goes On (Sonny & Cher)

the start of F*** You (Cee Lo Green) and Shambala (3 Dog Night)

Of course My Sweet Lord (Harrison) and He's So Fine (Chiffons)

I think you hear many songs simultaneously that resemble each other on the Residents "Third Reich and Roll" LP. This is one really strange band, believe you me!
