Sonic and (later?) Fisher speakers

Would anyone happen to know what the model was for a 3-way 12" woofer that had cane grills and solid wooden cabinets (tall bookshelf type)? Circa late 60's

I THINK they even possessed a control knob in the rear, but so long ago!

First of all I"d like to say hi to everyone, as this is my first post.

Very interesting thread, especially because last saturday I found a set of Sonics AS277's at a local garage sale, which is exactly why I found this site.

I payed $10 bucks for the pair, hoping that it would be some kind of lost audiophile treasure, but from what I've read so far they seem to be an "offbrand" of sorts, hmmm,

Have not listened to them yet, but what can I expect for 10 bucks right,

Aloha,

Never heard any glowing reviews of any Sonics speakers and the only Fisher speakers that seem to get any respect are the XP-series ones, for what all that's worth. Unless they're dirt cheap, you might wanna keep looking.

Yesterday I picked up a pair of XP6B's (Heritage series) from a garbage pile They were dirty and cheap! I removed the grill and found one woofer surround rotted out and the other did not play one speaker's tweeter works fine the other sounds real low, I am going to do some work on these to use somewhere. Do you think it's worth the time? See http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1284785#post1284785

SonicS Are made by Coral I believe....I have a pair of them and they are OK.....

As far as Sonic (no S) i have no idea.

These Sonic speakers that were given to me have Pioneer branded drivers in them. Real cheap looking drivers with small magnets and almost no XO. These are pretty much crap and ended up at the dump. You can see "Sonic" on the port.

True as it may be...

I was talking about the speakers I posted the picture of, I have no idea what he has or if they are similar in any way. They don't look like it so maybe his are fine, even good / great. I have no idea. I do know mine were crap. The woofer weighed about a pound and had a chew can sized magnet. The other drivers had little magnets as well and were all stamped steel. The whole speaker weighed about 20 pounds.

Again, talking about my Sonic's not his. I actually think his are made by Sansui or Coral so his might be fine. Just by looks alone it is obvious his are of higher quality. How high, Dunno.

Every speaker that comes thruough here gets refurbished (at least functionally)(eventually). Check for continuity through the dead woofer's voice coil. If nothing, then quite, IMO. Otherwise, there could be a bad solder joint, broken coil (if there is one), or what have you. As for the reduced output from the tweeter, an ailing crossover capacitor can cause this.

The Sonics (with 's') are not cheap junk, the woofers, 15+ inches weigh
24 lbs. each, 1 titanium tweeter, 2 super tweets, cone mids, and a very
elaborate crossover set-up.....AS-447, and almost indentical in size to
the Pioneer CS-99, and the consensus thus far, says Coral manufactured
drivers........Cheers!

Hey guys/gals

Do you guys think I should open them(Sonics AS277's) up to see what type of drivers are in there, The only reason I'm hesitant is because there are serial number stickers on the edge of the rear panel, as if to show if they've been tampered with,

Whatcha guys think?

There was a set of these at the SA here in Concord last Saturday. The cones were pushed in on each speaker, but not torn, IIRC.

fisher xp7k

I just bought a pair of these today, when I removed the grills, one had a dryrotted inverted foam surround and the other had an inverted rubber surround. That and the amount of caulk around the speakers told me they had been altered. Too bad, they still sounded good though. When I removed the woofers I was looking at a stamped steel basket painted in black with a red dot next to the positive lug. They looked exactly like the late 80s and early 90s Eminence drivers I used to use when I was building back then. The one with the rubber surround had been somewhat sloppily repaired. Wish whoever, hadn't screwed them up. For 15 bucks I'm not really out much and will probably repair or replace the woofers and punt them. It really is too bad because you can tell these were decent quality US speakers when they were made. Does anyone know what the original woofers were like?
