Sony's wildly erratic marketing left most people not realizing that they built some truly great gear.
85 bucks seems like a lot for about a nickle's worth of foam, but they need to come up with tooling for the mold or stamper, and there just aren't that many APMs out there, so there aren't millions of users to amortize the costs over. So I think that its the chamois or biting the bullet -- my feeling is that Guido's method will limit dynamics because the rubber has to stretch for large excursions. Probably at low excursions and at all midrange frequencies, it works like a charm, but loud or low, I would expect limiting.
If you want perspective -- I paid 100 bucks close to a decade ago for a pair of foams for my Lowther PM 6s and the unneeded, but included. foam spiders. If you have a rare speaker, you have to accept the expense of parts and bits and pieces.

I have a pioneer boom box (ck-5)with 7"x5" rectangular woofers, a similar tough fix. Some one had claimed success using a round surround by cutting and pulling straight and tacking with super glue. Ebay has 6x9 surrounds, Im thinking they would be easier to straighten, MAYBE.
