I wonder if he's planning on doing the same to those Altec amps...:sigh:
I think he should have give it to somebody that wanted it.
Just wait til that kid gets bored one day when the old man isn't around and it's "hammer time" for some of that other gear!![]()

That might be the one part i have a problem with, but my jury is still out on even that aspect.Teaching our youth that if it is old and not worth much to you (even though it worked) it is ok to destroy it.
Just because some fella doesn't share our particular screwball enthusiasms doesn't mean he's a screwball.

The guy was at least doing "something" with his kid, something that in many homes seems to be missing in our present society.
The kid was obviously pretty stoked about making the video, which indicates to me that he and dad don't do that every day, and probably hadn't done it before that.
Consider that it's all about perspective, we really don't know anything about the working condition of that unit. It was a low end quad Sony, they made much better quad decks than that, and for all we know the heads were shot, capstan bearings shot, drive clutch shot, or maybe even a victim of somebody else's incompetent service work or issues that rendered it beyond or impractical to repair. It lit up and the reels turned, that's really the limit of what we know about it's condition.
IMO, that ole Sony died with a helluva lot more dignity than the dozens that have gone under the wheels and blade of the compactor at your closest major landfill, and as a previous poster pointed out, even it's last "breath" gave testament to the build quality of a era quickly being forgotten. Father and son memorialized the event on video and generously shared the event with the public. I figure it's my responsibility to try to view it with an open mind.
I know Pete Townsend wouldn't have a problem with it.
Just my .02 y'all understand.................. flame away, it's cold here.![]()
I couldn't watch the whole thing, either. It just hurt too much. I know he has a right to do what he wants with his things, but that doesn't make this right. For the first time ever, I actually left a comment on YouTube, and it was nasty. He'll probably laugh at it and think I'm a fanatic, but I don't care. Idiots like this make me sick!
