Sony PM-5100 Jammed shaft - Thrust assembly - what to do?

Hi guys,

I'm restoring this Sony PM-5100 turntable which is in excellent condition apart from a jammed thrust bearing. I have no idea how to go about trying to free this up or remove it. I found bits of timber in the end of it and the set screw head worse for ware so guessing somebody else has had a crack at removing it but it seems to be frozen rock solid.

If I can get this bugger off and grease it and then put it back together the turntable should work perfectly.

Those can be buggers to remove. Most likely the grease or oil that was on the shaft has turned to cement. I see them fairly often

Remove that little screw. Applying heat can help soften the old lube and one of these can be very helpful at doing that. You still might need to get a good grip with slip joint pliers though:

Sweet! That worked a charm!
Now my next issues;

1) I've had to use 2 washers to get the shaft up to the correct height so the gears work properly for the auto return and reject mechanism. I wonder if the thrust bearing is the correct one? (looks like it)
2) I only get sound on the left channel only. I have installed a brand new stylus, original cartridge

Well I'm not sure if it's the wrong size but if I don't use the washers the shaft is too low. The gears don't engage and the platter kisses the belt feeder just prior to the motor.

Well if it works OK that's all that matters

It does work fine but the washers make a bit of a grinding noise as they are not very smooth. I still need to work out why I have music only in the left channel.

I have made thrust plates from plastic things I have around the house. Metal washer to go in first if you need the height and them something softer and lower friction to contact the actual bearing.

Nylon or Delrin is ideal but try what you have.
