Sony PS 8750

A question like this is probably better suited for Dollars & Sense, methinks. To me, it all depends on whether or not you have another amp or receiver to play the turntable through. The PS-8750 was apparently Sony's TOTL integrated turntable in the mid-late '70s. I recently picked up a PS-4750, and while it's not as fancy as the 8750, it appears to be a very capable turntable.

I just want to know if an 8750 is worth giving up my treasured Marantz for. Nothing to do with monetary values. Just trying to save up for it and the Marantz would be the most likely candidate to go given its price.

I think the next question would be how do you think the 8750 stacks up against the Denon DP-59L. Would I still need the Denon if I get that?

You might also consider if it would be a step up or sideways. How attached are you to the 2270? Just got the I need something new itch?

I'm good with the 2270 now. I've gone separates and I'm happy with what I have (for now lol). The 8750 is one of my bucket list items. Still love my DP-59 but I love the looks of the Sony better. I just don't know whether it is a sideways move or up, but Denon was not a slouch in the turntable section wither.

I'd take the newer and in some ways more capable DP-59L. It's almost 20 years newer (more or less half the age of the 8750 which was a mid-70s product where the Denon was mid to late 90s) so age is less of an issue, and like the 8750 was a TOTL or near-TOTL model by a maker that was capable of exceptional designs when they chose to make a statement.

That said, I really love the looks of the 8750 and if I could I'd own both - but have "settled" (for now anyway) for the related but slightly lesser DP-62L and PS-X7 models.

Hello,

There are only nine years separating the 8750 and the DP-59L/M, not twenty : 1974 vs. 1984.
Engineering-wise even less because the 59 is a looky-looky variant of what was available at Denon since since about 1978 (minus the fancy LCD display and mostly the bi-directional servo).

Good to know, thanks Axel.

I've been enjoying my DP-62L while working from home the past week and a half... unfortunately, the PS-X7 is completely inop now, time for a full service on that one.

Thought very highly of my PS-8750. The side of the platter eventually tarnished, so a coat of wax may help with that. The synthetic jewel bearings are a nice feature in the TA. Mine did require some electronics service by EchoWars once upon a time.

Also thought very highly of my PS-X7 (purchased new the year it was reviewed by Julian Hirsch) and played thousands of LPs on it over my 15yr of ownership. The auto-functions eventually wore out (nylon) and I sold to a friend who is fine with it as a manual TT and stills uses to this day. There is a thread on AK describing the repairs needed (with pic's) of the automated mechanical parts that wear, but my friend doesn't care.
