Sony PS-LX3: Repair (DIY?), Replace, or Move On?

Hey,

I've been in love with my Sony PS-LX3 for ten years. I had fond memories of the Technics (SL-10) that I grew-up with, which had a Repeat, and a Return function (and auto-cueing), and I basically just searched Craiglist for a turntable with those functions [side note: I have since bought, and promptly returned said Sl-!0. ugh!].

The Sony was...much nicer than what I expected. And it constitutes the Best turntable I've owned. Over the years, however, it has slowly been losing functionality. First the Start/Stop button was finicky. It came to light that moving the tone arm to the end manually might reset the Function, but that sort of has faded, too. Now it will stay in the run-out groove until I stop it. Sadly, the Repeat function is non-operable.

My local repair guy first told me there was some element (a capacitor, maybe. Don't quote me on that) that would fix the return, but that he would have to order them in bulk, and I would be charged with that. Now, he says the entire board is the problem. Please keep in mind that it essentially "works" if one were to monitor it, as one would most other players, just not how it should.

Q: Does any one have any insights on this? I'm not super proficient with electronics-nor am I stacked with the needed equipment- but I could certainly have a crack at Some work on it. I'm also kind of out of money lately. I see a circuit board on ebay, but I may be in over my head, or the repair guy could be wrong/making things up(as he is wont to do, believe it or not). What are my chances, do you think, or running into another player (they're more than I can spend), fixing it, or Is there a higher-end turntable, with similar functionality (forgive me, purists, but I REALLY want Repeat!) that you might recommend.

Thank you so much.
