Sony SS-7330....yes Sony !

I never spotted the bypassed cap.....i take it that the film cap is the Yellow one ?

What does "Bypassing" achieve in the crossover circuit ?
Yes, the yellow one is some form of film cap.
The larger cap, most likely an electrolytic, has poor transient response at high frequencies. Film capacitors have great transient response and lower distortion at high frequencies than electrolytics, so putting them in parallel with an electrolytic improves its overall response and sound and reduces distortion.

I recommend replacing all the electrolytic caps in the crossover with film caps. Concerning the tweeter I assume you measured right across the tweeter terminals on the tweeter itself?

The speakers sound fine to me without ripping them to bits, so the caps stay....

And yes i did the old tweeter is as dead as a door nail.....

Long as they sound good to you that is all that matters.

I never have the time to do anything like a recap.....

I have replaced the Sony tweeters for now (until i get a replacement tweeter) with Two Jamo danish made tweeters that fit quite nice and sound great....

If the tweeters match the other speakers in sound quality then my advice would be to leave them in.

Well i am going to run them in for a good few hours then decide, the tweeters have sweetened up a lot in the past few hours of running, the Jamo speakers they came from hail from 1984 and probably have not been used in a good few years.....

So far so good, and everyone says they look pretty good, so i am in no great hurry to take them out.

Its pretty amazing my local thrift had the donor speakers in (foams shot) and i got them for $5 !!

ya, those are definitely some sweet solid Sonys you got there. I'd keep'em or selling for a good penny so you get what they're really worth!

Interesting. Apparently, they used more than one tweeter in this model. This is a working one out of a SS-7330, that I saved:

I wonder if the one I have is a later unit? This one is rated at 60 watts, rather than 30 watts (as the ones in Cog's cabinets are labeled).

Gordon.

Is it marked as "ULM" on the back, if not its a replacement.

I was looking at a single Sony SS-850 (i think) speaker in my local thrift that had an almost identical tweeter to that one.

*EDIT*

sorry the second pic took a while to turn up........its a ULM all right.

Not your fault. After looking at your pics, I went back and snapped the second photo, and edited the post above to include it.

I am sure this one came from a SS7330. Had a pair with a dead tweeter, and since I couldn't find an original replacement at that time, I replaced both of them with SEAS aluminum-dome units (which worked fine, though they didn't sound exactly like the original ones). Kept the one working one, thinking I might find a replacement. Speakers are no longer here, so I just had the tweeter, sitting in a little box, stored away...

Gordon.

A thought- wonder if the tweeter from the other Sony speaker in your local thrift IS the same one as the one I have? Could they make a matched pair for the SS-7330s?

Regards,
Gordon.

little brother??

reading through this post reminded me of a set I've had in storage for 3-4 yrs. they are an SS 4300. 8" woofer with 8" passive and two tweeters. there has been a little mention of this model on AK. Same grill design as the 7330.
Maybe it's time to haul them inside for a listen.....:music:

Very interesting....a bit of oil on those cabs will make them glow.....

Provided that is not a water based finish some Kramer's Best antique improver http://www.kramerize.com/ will do wonders for that finish. I have used it at least 10 years and always have had excellent results. With this stuff follow the instructions exactly as written and everything should be good.
