Sony SS-7330....yes Sony !

I have tweeters for you!

Hey Cogsinister, you did great, they look pristine, almost new. The grills are super beautiful and I love that little blue logo. Some of the prettiest speakers I've ever seen. I hope they sound good.

If you still have them, I have some good news - I have some tweeters. I just bought a set of well cared-for 70's Sony SS-G5's and for whatever reason they've got the ULM tweeters from your model in them. They clearly belong more in your speakers than in mine...send me a PM if you're interested.

- Sam.

The speaker being a tri-amp setup and with those binding posts, I wonder of they are the speakers made to go with the 5000 tuner, the 2000 preamp and the smaller of the 2 power amps from that lineup. I seem to remember a diagram from Sony showing the system in a tri-amp setup. Maybe someone with the literature could check and see of the speaker model number is in the diagram. If so, a good excuse to go Sony hunting.

The diagram I've seen was from a few years prior, and I think it was SS-3300s as the speakers. As mentioned above the SS-3100 was the one down in the range from the '3300, but the SS-7660 replaced the big one, and the '7330 the smaller one, so I'm sure later versions of the tri-amp diagram show them. The amps shown in the diagram are the TA-3200, not the smaller, "half-rack" amps. Having had both types of amps, I'd go with the 3200 anyway. They are still available for sub $200 prices. Harder to find the speakers though.

SS-7330 definitely seems to be Japan only, the audioidiots website only shows the SS-7300 model in all of its European catalogues from that era, which seems to be second from the TOTL SS-7600. (http://audioidiots.com/merk.apparaat.php?apparaatID=4029)

Interesting that you can tri-amp them, Sony had some peculiar ways back then. I like it.

Matching a vintage correct Sony amp/tuner section would be awesome...

I will PM you later on about the tweeters when my internet is working better....sounds like a great offer...

Neil.

There's a small reference to the 7660 on the Vintage Knob (it's back, sort of). Can't link to individual pages anymore (or I can't - maybe there's a way), but it's in the Speaker section of the Sony Vaults.

Yea, interesting write up. And they are right, their pics are crap. They should use some of these!

I'm new here Hand looking for some help. I hope it's OK to resurrect this older thread.

I just bought a pair of Sony SS-7330s for $50. They look a little rough but everything seems to work OK. They also sound great. I am going to Deoxit the L-pads and change the capacitors when I get a chance.

The biggest problem with these speakers is the tweeters were replaced at some point. They were replaced by Realistic 40-1276. The replacement tweeters specs say 8 ohms +/- 15% at 6000Hz and 40Watts of program peaks. From another site, I found a photo of the original tweeter that is shown below. All I know about the OEM is 6 ohms at 30 Watts peak. I do not know if the electronics were altered to work with the different tweeters. I'll try to check that tomorrow.

I have two goals that I am requesting help with:

  1. I want to find OEM tweeters. I have searched the big auction site and the internet with no success. Does anyone know of a source for these tweeters?
  2. Since finding an OEM replacement for the tweeters may be a long term project, I would like to find a more suitable replacement for use in the interim. The diameter of the "speaker hole" is about 4.75 inches. I have found a tweeter at Parts Express that seems to be a closer match to the original. Specs listed below. I don't know the frequency range of the originals. Do you think the HiVi Q1R 1-1/8" Textile Dome Tweeter could be a good temporary replacement tweeter to use until an OEM can be found?
HiVi Q1R 1-1/8" Product Specifications
  • Tweeter TypeSoft Dome
  • Cone / Dome Diameter1-1/8"
  • Impedance6 ohms

Any assistance or advice will be greatly appreciated!!

Anyone have any thoughts on these in comparison to the SS7400? Very similar, but I think the 7400 is older, and alnico magnet structures, I've never looked inside mine, have no desire to jinx them. There is a set potentially for sale locally price is such I'd say it's worth it, but, I'd lose money if I tried to sell them as these are pretty much under the radar.
