Sony SS-M9ED

While some of us may me in competition for these items, this is a Dollars and Sense forum. Can someone tell us how much these each of these four items have sold for in the past?

Also interesting that each of the speakers, amp and preamp currently have one bid for $2,500, $3,500 and $2,500, respectively. Sounds like seller might have a shill working the action?

Honestly I don't see the concern here as to whether he does or does not have the speakers, since it is a local pickup only sale all you need to do is go over there verify they exist look and sound good then pay by PayPal on your phone or his home PC when you pick them up considering that it is an Ebay/PayPal sale the buyer is 100% protected on his money, if they do not exist or look or sound awful simply retract your bid/s. Perhaps I am missing something here that you other folks see :scratch2:

Snow,

I'll wager you that if you e-mail that you want to pay in person or view the goods that he'll have some excuse not to allow it.

Also those speakers, while nice sounding, are perhaps a bit $over-hyped$.

They are definitely celebrated, but I wouldn't say they are "$over-hyped$". I haven't even seen enough for sale to figure out what their market value is.

The build quality is second to none and as a previous owner to their little brothers (that sounded so, so good), if I had the cash, I'd be looking into them. When I finally sold mine off (to leave the country), I was left believing that I'll probably never own anything again that was built so heavily. I have yet to see speakers that were designed with this care and build quality at any price level. They are a special pair of speakers that mark a weird time for Sony where they just WENT FOR IT.

I've heard them, they sound very good.
They look cool.
I've heard comparably just as good for considerably less.
Market value along with hype they can go through the $roof$, perception being the key as always.

Maybe he means his specific address, so they won't get stolen, as others have mentioned above.
That is my best guess. I would not want people coming to my house either unless I knew they were legit buyers, thieves look on CL and Ebay too  If I had 12k worth of gear to sell it would be an easy thing for a thief to place the highest bid knowing full well they were not going to pay then come over look, listen then say sorry I changed my mind then come back the next day and steal them along with whatever else they seen of value in the house.

Possibly so but I still do not see the need for concern even if you paid in advance
Ebay/PayPal guarantees your money back if the item does not exist or not as described.

They are a special pair of speakers that mark a weird time for Sony where they just WENT FOR IT.

This was a large chunk of Sony's existence. Look at the stratospheric-level Sony stuff cataloged at The Vintage Knob, going all the way back into the 1960s. They had a strange corporate habit of spending insane amounts of R&D money on projects that they barely promoted in the end. Some of them (the SS-Mx speakers, the high-end turntables) actually made themselves known in the marketplace. Others were built in tiny handfuls, and exist more as rumor and whispers than actual products that mere mortals will ever encounter.

Overall, a very strange company.

No, no shill :)

I have emailed back and forth with the seller. He is the second owner and has had them for the last 14 years.

Over hyped? Not really, I have the M7 and if they are any indication..
The way I see it is if I were to buy a modern day speaker that's coparable, I'd spend in the neighborhood of $5k a piece, maybe more.

Okay. A few hours left on the soeakers and just two bids. Now around $2,500. Does everyone believe this is genuine?

I'm waiting about a month before I make my judgement. I'll tell you all why I'm waiting a month when that comes around.

Ahhhh!! I was in at $3k. I assumed these would have gone higher and didn't pay attention when they ended. Damn, I would have paid that! The number I had in mind was $3,500, I was planning on going that high. I should have just bid that and been done with it.
Oh well..stupid hurts sometimes. At least now I don't have to sell off a lot of gear to cover it.

Anyone see what the amp he had up sold for?
