Sony STR-6045 - Cleaning / Trouble Removing Tuner Knob

Recently I picked up a Sony STR-6045 receiver and it's pretty dirty. This is my first time trying to clean up a receiver and I was hoping to get a little advice. I'll update these questions with answers as I go along in case it helps someone down the road.

I have a couple of questions:

1: Remove all of the knobs, which I have done except for the tuner knob that I'm unable to pull right off like the others. It appears to have a flathead screw that may be keeping it on. I have attached a picture and was hoping someone could verify this. There was indeed a flathead screw that needed to be removed in order to take off the tuner pot.

2: Some of the knobs appear to have had some sort of cloth or fabric giving them a tighter fit. When I try putting one of the knobs back on without the tattered cloth it just slips right off. Could anyone tell me what sort of cloth this is? I was able to wedge the cloth back in though I will use tin foil as another user suggested should the cloth wear away.

3. Other than compressed air is there anything I can do to clean it out? I plan to get my hands on some Deoxit down the road. I used compressed air on it but there is still quite a bit of dirt and muck that remain. Any advice on how to take care of this?

4. There are three dead bulbs that are supposed to light up when Stereo, AM, or FM are selected. With my very limited experience is it possible to replace these three bulbs? I've attached pictures of the ones I'm talking about. I see the section of the service manual that talks about the Stereo light, but I'm afraid I don't see where it mentions the AM/FM lights. I have some lights on the way from Dave, though I'm not entirely sure how to install them.

5. The backlight appears to be out on the unit. Will replacing the two burnt fuses on either side of the Tuner Display put the backlight back into operation? The fuses read: Stanley SS 8V0.3A S83. I have two fuse lamps 8v/250ma on the way from Parts Express that should do the trick.

6. How can I tell if the Stereo / Mono switch is working properly? I’m unable to tell just by listening.

7. Why does the stereo light blink off and on and remain off most of the time? This occurs while listening to the radio, playing from a turntable but not while playing through the aux.

Photos not working.

Tuning knob may have set screw hiding behind face plate, look in from the end.

Forget cloth on shafts, use a little tin foil.

Thank you kaplang, that did the trick. It came right off.

I was able to take the faceplate off and will clean that. I see plenty of dust behind the glass which I'm not exactly sure how to clean, perhaps it will become more clear once I'm able to remove the top.

Do you have any idea how I would remove the top of this unit so I can spray out the dust within it? All I know is the sticker on the lefthand side of the unit when facing it says do not unscrew that side or the back. This leads me to believe unscrewing the righthand side might be the way to go. I've attached a picture.

Be carful cleaning the inside of the glass. In fact I recommend not doing it at all. The letters and numbers are very subject to coming of if you do.

The 2 screws on either side should all be removed to be able to remove the top. Once the screws are removed you can slide the top back a little and the lift it off.

I won't touch the glass then, thank you. Do you think warm water and soap could possibly damage the letters and numbers on the glass too? I'll settle for just blowing so compressed air on it if there's a risk of damaging it.

I'm going to attempt to remove the top, wish me luck.

Soap and water may not do damage but the only way to find out is to try. I still don’t recommend it

Thanks, spraying compressed air behind the glass seems to have done a pretty good job so I'm not going to worry about washing it. I was also able to get the top off the unit and clean that out a bit. Just one or two cobwebs.

The next task for me is to figure out if I (with my very limited abilities in this area) could possibly replace the dead bulbs in the unit. While the Tuner Input light still works, the three lights that signal if Stereo, FM or AM are selected all appear to be out of order.

I also noticed that two fuses on either side of the Tuning Display appear to be burnt out, maybe this explains why the backlight isn't working. The fuses read: Stanley SS 8V0.3A S83.

Do you think replacing these would have any affect on the backlight or the three dead lights?

Thought aren't fuses. Look like fuses but are bulbs.

I think they are 8 volt bulbs but not sure.

If you have a volt meter take a voltage reading from the bulb socket and see what you get. It’s probably around 8 volts

If it is 8 volts the parts express bulbs should work as long as they are the same size.

They appear to be the same size so I'll order a couple of those and cross my fingers. I don't own a volt meter, but it sounds like I should pick one up.

It sounds like replacing these two fuses could fix the backlight problem but not the Stereo, AM, FM lights not turning on problem, right?

For the Stereo light it looks like there may be some soldering involved, something I'm not yet comfortable doing in a situation where I may permanently damage something. I still haven't been able to find how to replace the AM/FM lights in the Repair Manual though. I've attached the pages relevant to the lights that I could find as well as the Table of Contents in case I'm just overlooking where the AM/FM light replacement may be located.

You’ll need to be able to do some soldering to replace those bulbs. If you have any interest get an iron, some solder and some flux and practice with something you don’t care about. I learned from my Mother who was an assembler for Lockheed Aircraft back in the 80s. It is one of my legacies.

She sounds like the perfect person to learn from.

What would you recommend as far as soldering irons go? I have an extremely cheap one I picked up from Radio Shack years ago. I've seen some folks mention having one where you can control the temperature. I'll need to pick up a solder sucker, some solder (have you used flux core solder before?) and some flux (would you recommend water soluble flux?).

Do you have any recommendations of where to find bulbs I would need?

You should use what you have to learn with. I will let others chime in as to what solder and flux to get and you should post that Quesrion in the DIY forum. I’m not that picky and just use what i have acquired over the years.

Looking in the service manual I see the Stereo, FM, AM lamps are: 4.5V 40aM. Unfortunately I can't find where these are available for sale. I've attached a screenshot from the service manual.

The stereo light on the STR-6045 flashes off and on. Could this be a symptom of the bulb dying or do you believe there may be a large underlying problem? I haven’t discovered whether or not anything specific causes this. It’s off the majority of the time but will occasionally flash on.

That said, I'm not positive the Stereo/Mono switch works as I can't decipher a distinct difference on either setting.
