Sony STR-6055 Receiver, Is it good?

I have a chance to pick one up for $80 working does have some static when you turn the volume knob, but nothing some deoxit wont fix. Is it worth it? I love the way it looks, but just don't want to drop 80 on it if its not worth it. Does anyone have one? What do you think?

The one pictured isn't the one I'm purchasing but it is the same exact model, just a picture for reference.

Generally a nice unit, dates from about 1973, just around the time Sony started bringing in electronics under their own name (other than reel to reel). Likely was their next-to-top of the line at the time, healthy amount of power, well built since this was their intro to the US market. $80 perhaps a bit high, but not excessive.

Owning two of them, I would say "Yes"! A search of AK will find many favorable reports. I'm a fan of the 60x5 series in general (also have the 6045 and the 6065). They're all relatively easy to clean up and relamp

I think $80 for one in good condition with a case is pretty fair. If it's important to you, check out the lettering pretty carefully as they have a tendency to wear off, especially the Volume and Power switch labeling.

Bad physical condition to me is the biggest turn off. That's because generally issues concerning it's operation can be dealt with. If it's condition looks anything like the one pictured, go for it.

Man I like yours without the wood around it looks good. Is it suppose to not have the wood?

Yeah that's why I am a little on the fence about it. There is a ding in the upper right corner on the front part of the wood that is kinda bugging me. The metal face is in really nice shape. I feel like if it didn't have that chip I would pick it up.
 
If working... very good price.A small chip on the wood can be easily repaired.In my opinion these are better sounding than a number of similar makes and still can be had relatively cheap.

You are correct; the chip ruins everything. You'll hate it. Please tell me where it is and how I can contact the seller?
 
I've had a 6055 since new and can't say enough about it. It served me for years. I even sold off an SX727 because it didn't measure up to the Sony. Then it went to my Mother's for many years. When I inherited it back, I loaned it out for another bunch of years. It's back again and needs some work but worth it. Something about them, everything "feels" right and solid. Not the prettiest but more industrial looking. Well built and durable.

I'm talking overall physical condition.
Should be able to do something with a wood chip. If the metal face were all beat up and have missing knobs, I would be more inclined to skip it. But the way you describe it, that doesn't look to be the case.

The wood case was an extra cost option and is considered very desireable. Generally, the wood cases can be repaired or at least the damage concealed. I just consider a few dings and scratches marks of character!

I actually bought my second STR6055 just for the case. The power cord on the receiver itself had been cut so I assumed it wasn't functional. Much to my delight, when I put a new cord on it, it functioned perfectly and I've been using it ever since. I ended up putting the case on my STR6065.

Well built, good looking units with the case. That 3 position function switch is the bees knees. As mentioned, volume lettering tends to be worn off.

Your photography is excellent so I can understand why it was used as an example!

I noticed that the case on yours looks like it's from the later series (70x5) with the wood slat vent. I actually prefer that look to the metal grill used on the earlier ones.

Ya know, I think I salvaged the power switch on it from a trashed 7045, maybe the case, too, don't remember. Too many systems have been through here, lol. Still have the Sony, though.
