Sony STR-6055 Receiver, Is it good?

Lol, that's funny. I just googled it and that was the first picture that came up with the wood vent, which is the exact one I was looking at had. Jwhvt is right Very good photography, thats a great looking piece you have there.

I Think I'm going to snag it. I dis like the corner, but the rest seemed pretty good. I'll post pics and you guys can be the judge. Thanks everyone who gave their two cents, much appreciative.
 
A small chip in the wood is not so bad. Think of it this way, if you accidentally put another chip in the wood, it won't be such a big deal :)
 
here's mine with my 7065's wood case when it was out for service. i liked the looks of the 6065's case better but it is such a pita to hook up the speaker cables because the terminals are recessed when the unit is inside the sleeve. i wouldn't pass up on the original sleeve though. it does make the unit look a lot nicer.

i picked it up a couple of months ago and you won't believe how dirty the thing was. i almost returned it after i opened it up and saw the inside. but as you can see, they do clean up nicely.
i think the 6055 has a different sonic signature compared to the 7065 and 6065: it sounds detailed but brighter to me. i'm giving it to my dad who loves the sound a lot.
 
Alright I picked up the receiver, this is what it looks like. I cleaned it up and made her shinny. The last picture is of it all clean. I am in the process of glueing down the 2 vent pieces you see on the left of the picture. It should fix it and make the vent look right.

Yes the lettering was perfect. The knobs were really dirty, I pulled them and gave them a good cleaning and it really made it look a lot better. gluing down the vent slats that had come loose. Any ideas on what to use to make the wood look a bit brighter?

It looks pretty darn nice! Have you treated it with deoxit yet? Interested in hearing what you think of its sound.

You might want to try Howard's Restor-A-Finish on the case. It won't fill in the gouges but it does a good job of hiding blemishes.

I ordered some deoxit last night, but it sounds pretty damn good so far. Definitely needs some deoxit though as certain knob turns result in static. I'll check out Howard's Restor-A-Finish, Thanks!

With the power off, you can also cycle through the controls rapidly to mechanically clean them up some. You'll should still use Dexoit but it could help.
 
The frequency response ceilings out at 60 kHz @ .2% THD

I'd throw it back because whatever you hook up to it narrows the bandwidth to the speakers ! Saying you have a decent TT with a distortion rate of 0.025, why run that signal through a receiver that increases the distortion rate ?
 
Congrats on your new to you Sony. +1 on the Howards. Great stuff. I have the smaller 6050 that I just put back into the lineup. I bought mine online. Needed a major cleaning but now purrs and sounds as good as the best of them.
 
Looks great! The STR-6055 was my gateway drug, I really like the appearance and it has led to what can only be described as a "Sony Habit."

I feel that the lettterings on my sonys -except for the 6200 - are quite resistant to getting rubbed off. I've soaked them in warm soapy water, rubbed bluemagic and pledge on them and they've come out unscathed. i Certainly more robust than my dual 1229's that disappeared after i used a bit of metal polish on it. :biggrin:
