SONY STR-V6 intermittently dropping the right channel.

I posted in the DIY forum also.
Newby here and just learning where to post. Sorry about that.
I have had this receiver for a couple of months now and have been happy with it. Recently the right channel has been dropping out intermittently.
This can’t go on. Seems to be getting worse.
Where should I start here?

    wanted to get a stereo for the basement and wound up with a Sony STR-V6.
    It seemed to be in great condition and it worked without a hitch for a couple of months. It has just recently started to intermittently drop the right channel. This is certainly unacceptable. Where to start?

    Hello there. and welcome to AK.
    Not knowing your technical skills, I'd say start by re-seating your RCA and speaker connections. While you're at it, wiggle the RCA jacks just a little while music is playing. That's a very basic first step.

    Checked the connections. I have 2 sets of speakers. Can run “A”, “B”, and “A+B”.
    The issue is the same on both A and B.
    Checked continuity of all wires. Hooked right channel speakers up to the left channel, they work.
    Opened the cabinet. Turned on the power and everything worked then the right channel dropped again.
    If I move the balance to the right channel only and turn up the volume sound can faintly be heard from the right channel speakers.
    Guess I can start checking continuity from the speaker wire inputs back.
    Would anyone happen to know where a service manual for this may be found.
    I am not afraid to dive in. I have some mechanical and electrical aptitude.

Well done on the quoting.
I couldn't easily get a service manual on line, just now.

Get that and we can move forward from there (with other's help as well, I'm sure).
 
Cool beans. You probably have figured out that you'll want to "divide and conquer".

See if you can determine if the issue is on the pre-amp side, or in the amp. Sometimes, I'll start by checking output transistors for shorts, and I'll also use a scope to trace the signal on the preamp\tone side.
While the top is off, also keep an eye out for visibly damaged components, but that's more of a rarity for me. I've seen more cracked solder joints than visibly blown caps, for example.
I'm not a pro at this by any means, I have to admit, I fumble around at first and if nothing turns up, then I really start looking schematic and checking voltages, and pulling parts to check values.
 
Tech in the can aka residue free contact cleaner is your friend in this situation. Intermittent channel drop is a classic symptom of dirty controls. Work the switches and buttons when the drop occurs, if the channel returns or you get static at the speakers, you have your answer. Expensive brand D is not necessary. I use MG Chemicals available at Fry's Electronics. Twice the can for half the price.
 
Well.
You guys have already put me on the right path.
I was playing with the tuning knob and heard some scratching noises coming out of the right channel speakers.
Pushing, pulling, and jiggling got the right side working. A tap on the tuning knob made it drop out again. Got it back on by fiddling with it again.
Going to order the cleaner and lube. I am sure this will fix the immediate issue.
 
Canned air to blow the dust out of the fins seems to called for.
DO NOT SPRAY THEM WITH CLEANER!

Yes I was talking about the tuning capacitor fins. But a good cleaning of the controls seems like a good idea. I have never used CRC but if it is plastic safe zero residue electronics cleaner then it should work.

If in Louisville Ky, Peerless Electronics on 7th or Guitar Center carry cleaner sprays.

No dropping of Chanel’s now. Sounds beautiful. Thanks guys.
