I rescued one of these monsters from the landfill. It has a torodial transformer. I'm no tech, but there is no voltage from the secondary windings. Two questions:
1- Anyone have a source for a replacement toroid xformer?
2- do any other of the Sony STR-V4, V5, V6 share the same xformer?

I have transformers from a V5 and V6. The V6 runs at a higher voltage. The V7 is probably higher than the 6. I could dig out the 6 and give you the part number if that would help.
 
Good save! This is Sony's most powerful receiver.

The service manual shows 65V volts for the V7 and 60.5V for the V6, so the secondary voltages are a bit different. That's close enough for me, although the theoretical power is of course a bit more at 65V. I had initially thought the V7 used a center-tapped secondary for the amp section but it's a quirk of the schematic; no center tap.

There is a circuit breaker for the secondary, labeled CB601, on the power supply board.

There is also a primary side soft-start circuit, also on the power supply board. The soft start uses a thermal fuse + 2 resistors that are shorted by a relay once the secondary voltage starts to rise. If the thermal fuse is open (possibly caused by bad softstart relay contacts or a bad amp channel), then the primary never sees anything even though the power switch is on.

That is one of the few items I would buy at a TS or FM, if I ever found one. Good luck. Having transformers go kaput is really a rare occurrence. I hope you find it is something less difficult.
 
I have a STR-V6 that was playing fine then suddenly went dead and would never turn on again the circuit breaker CB601 is good and so is the glass fuse . So both fuses are intact so what caused it to just go dead without warning it was only on for less than 10 minutes and the heat sinks were not even warm enough and the Toroidal transformer was cold still. So what could be my problem?

You would probably be best served starting a new thread to troubleshoot your unit.
