Sony TA-N77ES

I found a Sony TA-N77ES on the street today. It looked somebody just emptied out a bunch of stuff from someones apartment and this was on the street. It almost killed me carrying it home, it is really heavy.
It seems way more complicated than the Technics SA-505 that I use now, what do you think? Should I try to get this going with my turntable and Boston Acoustic A60 speakers? It doesn't have all the inputs that my Technics has and no AM/FM tuner and I don't know if my bookshelves can even hold the weight.
Basically what's the story behind this thing?
And sorry I should have started this off with that I am really new to all of this and just like to listen to records, and occasionally itunes.

Please post a picture of the unit you "found" on the street.
 
My TA-N77ES is one of my most prized possessions. Check the vintage knob site for photos and background information on this amp, which remains one of Sony's crowning achievements IMO. Its a terrific amp, incredible build quality, the only issue is the lights on the meters are finicky and prone to early failure (which can be fixed, as mine is, by replacement with LEDs). These amps, even for parts, command very high prices (mint ones go for more than $1000). You need to find the matching preamp, the TA-E77ES or its successors, the TA-E1000ES, or the TA-E2000ES to go with it. Great score, good for you!!!
 
wu6fiend Thank you for the information. I am going to do some research as I don't even know what a preamp is. But for now I guess this is going into storage until I get all the right parts.

you need to buy a preamp. Where are you located? If near the Bay Area CA, let me know I can get you a preamp you test with.

you found a valuable and desirable amp. You did verry well. May need some restoration, but well worth the investment.

I'd love to dig into to myself, that would be a fun build project!

I am actually in NYC, though I wish I was in the bay area.
So can you explain to me the benefit of this TA-E77ES? Will it make things sounds better? Do I need to get different speakers to?
I don't have a lot of money so I don't want to get in over my head.
I'm pretty handy and re-coned the Boston Acoustic Speakers, and I got most of the static and quirks out of the Technics Receiver that I have.
I already have a bad record buying habit...

A bad record byinf habit... no that's a good habit ;)

Ok, so short answer... yes it will sound better. More power, better sounding amp.

Long answer: The amp your found is one of Sonys flagships. Verry powerful, and quite rare. for folks who collect audio gear, you found a piece people save for years for... Sony did make a lot of good gear, but not usually as desirable as others. But the amp you found is probably one of their most desired amps.

Ok for sound. Paired with the correct preamp, you will have a fantastic sound stage. You don't need to upgrade your speakers, but I'm sure later done the line you will want to. It's part of the hobby, I'd say don't do anything other than finding a cheap preamp to test to see if it works. It may need work. DO NOT THROW OUT if you get no sound.

As it sits you can pull a quick grand... or more... we usually don't talk money on the site, but you really hit it out of the park. Fully restored (new caps) you will make some good coin.

Step 1: CL a cheap preamp.

Step 2: enjoy it If it's functioning.

If not, you may need to have it rebuilt. At this point it's an investment... but considering you got it for free, you will make a good return.

What part of the City you in? My parents grew up in NY. They are visiting this week.

My gals sister is also inner city, (school).

Verry cool find! I'd love to see this thread continue with you fixing it up and enjoying it! :)
 
Ok I will start looking for a preamp. It may take a while but I will keep updating.

Damn! I want to move to your neighborhood. I hardly ever find anything decent on the street in my part of Brooklyn (although I did score a pair of ADS L-7s a few weeks ago).

That is a VERY nice amp, and the basis for a killer system. Great score.

Yes, you will need to get a preamplifier and a tuner to use that beast. Tuners are cheap and plentiful on Craigslist. Preamps are harder to come by, but some receivers have a set of "pre-out" jacks on the back that will allow you to use them as a preamp/tuner combo. And some companies like Adcom made tuner/preamp combinations that would serve double duty.

Basically the preamp is the thing you plug all your components into, and it routs the signal from them into the amp, to which you attach your speakers; the preamp also controls the volume of the signal being sent to the amp.

I would have it checked up by somebody before I would turn it on. I might be faulty and turning it on might make it worse.

Unbelievable. A Sony TA-N77ES found for free. You just had a major score. Like everyone else has said, well worth the effort to have it fixed. Just wow. :bowdown:
