Sony TC 199-SD volume.

On my Sony TC 199-SD tape deck, there is no control which says "Volume". The nearest it has is labelled "Phones Level /Line Out" (see pic). It is very quiet and if it is half way up, I have to turn the amplifier volume way up. I currently have the Phones Level /Line Out, up full and this enables me to have the amp's volume at a normal level.

What worries me, is that the tape deck may be damaged by having the Phones Level /Line Out turned up full. Apart from that, everything on the Sony tape deck works and sounds great.

The service manual for this unit shows that it has both fixed and variable line outputs. The variable line outputs provide signals that vary with adjustment of the headphone/line output control on the front panel. The fixed line outputs will provide signals that are not affected by changes in the position of this control. These are the outputs that should be connected to your receiver if you want to use the receiver's volume control to adjust the volume although if you choose to use the variable outputs there should really be no issue with having the headphone/line output control set to maximum.
