My tc730 will not go into REV mode. It tries, but the solenoid will not pull in. It tries to pull in, but there is only about 30v. If I help it pull in, it will hold. Anyone familiar with this deck and can explain where the higher voltage would come from to do the initial pull in...and how then the voltage is changed to the lower voltage after it is pulled in? I have the SM and it says all solenoids should pull in with high voltage (about 170v). My input voltage (house voltage) is about 122vac and the deck voltage selector is set at 120v. BTW, the other solenoids (brake, capstan ) pull in and hold good. Thanks

Often, there is a microswitch mechanically connected to the solenoid linkage that switches between hold and pull voltage. The switch could be defect. You need to indicate the solenoid ID #. Like "PM602".

The solenoid that isn't pulling in is the "direction change solenoid", PM603. You woke up my brain! I wasn't thinking. S601 is pushed when the solenoid is pulled in. I just wasn't thinking that it could be normally closed and then opened when it is pushed. So I will check it tomorrow (Monday) (too late tonight) to see if it has high voltage coming in to the switch and then. if so. see if it is passed on to the solenoid. Thanks tapetech. That would be great if that is the problem...micro switches are easy to get. This deck uses 2v direction lamps, which I couldn't find, so I put in a LED instead. It works great and is bright enough...and the 1.5v that drives it doesn't need a resister for the LED. But after I put in the LED, after a few test direction changes, the solenoid quit pulling in. A coincidence? I don't know, but I can't see (by reading the schematics) how the LED could have caused any problem. But I'm posting here and asking questions because I'm having trouble understanding the schematic anyway :>) I'll post after I check voltages and the switches.
 
Glad you fixed the problem and I have a similar problem with my 730......mine changes direction to reverse but still plays the forward track backwards.....since I am not a repair person is there anything I should look for that I could fix myself?
I have another 730 that is for parts.
