Speaker advice - moving to bigger rooms

We have just purchased a new (to us) house and I'm hoping for advice on adapting and/or replacing my present speakers once we move. Currently, I have a pair of 6" Linn Tukans in a tiny living room, and AR-4Xs in a small/medium dining room. Both pairs are wired to my Marantz 2245. In the new house we'll have a living room of about 2200 cu. ft., and a "family room" of about 1500 cu. ft. My first thought was to place the ARs in the smaller family room and get some bigger speakers for the living room. The Linns could go in home office with another system. But I got to wondering if instead those speakers could be used in the respective-sized rooms by adding subwoofers? Any advice appreciated! If it helps, we listen to vinyl, cassettes, CDs, and digital, not necessarily in that order. We listen to some rock, but mainly jazz, folk, blues, bluegrass, Americana, classical, and not terribly loud. Thanks, Steve

I've been listening to some Cambridge Audio S30's all week, paired up with an AR s300 subwoofer and it sounds great. They're also smaller than your Linn Tukans.

My only suggestion would be to pony up for a decent powered sub, ten to twelve inch minimum.

Here's a little snippet of mine playing yesterday. this is in a 20x20x8 room

Thanks for your response. So, you're saying the ARs in the larger room, and the Linns in the smaller room, each with a subwoofer, and they would fill out the spaces well? The two rooms are across a hallway from each other, and each are nearby the kitchen. If they're both playing at the same time, would there be any problems or conflict? Like — I don't know — being over-woofed or something? Sorry for my ignorance on this stuff, just trying to learn. I don't know much about subwoofers. What should I be looking for that would balance well with my system? I saw a couple of JBL S1 subs on the local CraigsList. They look like tall, narrow boxes though. Would they work or should I be looking for something else?

First of all I would not run both pairs simultaneously as the Linns are four ohms and the AR's are eight ohm, bad things will happen to your Marantz if you do.

I would put the Linns in the room you intend to listen in the most as they're your best speaker, and pick up a nice powered sub, it'll be less of a load for your Marantz then trying to run a passive sub.

Thanks for this. I didn't know that about the difference in ohms. I'll stop playing them together now. I know the Linns are a more high-end speaker, but I actually like the sound of the ARs better. The Linns, if I'm expressing it right, sound cleaner, but the ARs seem to have a warmer tone. Perhaps what I'm actually hearing is because the ARs are bigger, they're more appropriately sized to the room? (Given I'm not using either with a subwoofer now.)
