Speaker Cabinet Construction

Well, I guess I need to start thinking about higher frequencys now :scratch2:
Let me start by saying that 95% of my listening is all strings (bluegrass). No drums, keyboards, or winds. Lots of "high lonesome" male voice, and tons of female voice. I think the big bass fiddle is covered, but what about the mandolins and banjos? I might also add that my high frequency hearing is probably not too good due to years of high pitched centrifugal chiller exposure. :tears: Seems like I like lots of midrange (Heresys have been my choice to date with their large "squaker" horns. I would imagine that I will get some mid from the direct radiator woofer. Other than that I'm fairly clueless. BTW I like "BIG" stuff, but don't want something real "honky" like a huge PA horn. Suggestions appreciated, Jay :D
 
As per below. This crossover is for the Pi Speakers 4pi Theatre series that uses the similar Eminence Delta-15 and Eminence PSD2002 horn driver and H290 horn.

For use with the Gamma-15 woofer:

R1 = 25 ohms, 40w
R2 = 16 ohms, 40w
C1 = .47 uf, 200v
R3 = 8 ohms, 40w
C5 = 47 uf, 200v

A 40w resistor can be made by wiring four 10w resistors of the same value in series-parallel. But since you are using this speaker system with a very low power tube amp, you can just use single 10w resistors.

I did research in 1970's as to best material for speaker cabinets in theroy. The material was cement (don't laugh). It does not vibrate HOWEVER it is not practical to use. Cement cabinets are heavy, look ugly and difficult to work with. My professor said ....yup for sure. The next best material is particle board (veneer is optional) because it has no grain to cause vibrations. When you use this material all holes must be predrilled.....you will find out why. The thicker the better..I use two boards sandwiched with contact cement and many screws...one every 6 inches. My system is 1 and 3/8 inch thick. I wish I used just a one inch thick board due to weight. My cabinets are 37 x 18 x 25 inchs.
 
Here's the important part of any huge speaker job. A really sweet wife. :thmbsp: She has a masters degree in Theatre and said that these would be just about right for a 5000 seat vinue. She also raised a good point when she asked if they would sound right at low volume. I went out on a limb and answered, "of course they will, I know what I'm doing." I guess we'll find out soon enough. :smoke:

Edit- Sorry, I forgot to rotate all the pics in this and the previous post. I hate it when I have to cock my head like that. And BTW the Missus is trying to make a face there, she's actually quite cute. :D

I keep reminding her that music is an art form, and the only other way I can express myself is by picking on my Banjo. :D That seems to help quite a bit. I will give all the younger AKers a tip for handling their women. Be fair, but most of all be firm! :smoke:

Yeh, Paul's got me lined out on the comp. drivers, but I'm still looking for some Altec 511's or hopfully 811 horns. I'm going for a somewhat retro look. Planning on using some sort of retro grill cloth in frames on front. :scratch2:
 
Man, looks GREAT! Some 811's or 511's on top would be very cool!

You can get poly fiberfill batting from fabric stores or WallyWorld's fabric dept.

I have to wait for the monsoon season to stop here so I can start cutting wood myself!

What you are doing is not really much different from these two scoops. One is inverted, but both have the 511 horns on top.

Well, I've never tried anything for the first time without at least a couple of clip leads attached to it. I couldn't resist hooking one up to the old Fisher 200 I was usuing for work tunes. This brings up the first "Important Safety Tip" of the thread.

Do not stick your entire head into the mouth of the horn and wait for "the big bass hit" part of the song intro.

These things go way down. I don't think I'll ever want more than a few good watts in my 20x25 living room. :D
