Speaker ID needed

I only have this picture to go by, does anyone reconize these speakers? They have a thin wavy emblem at the bottom corner.
Look to be older, maybe from the early 60s.

Can't help... but to comment that if they were under 3 bills, they'd be mine! those have a great look!

I don't know how much they are. I think the speakers are rectangle and not wider at the top like the picture makes it look.

They are Electrovoice Baronet extension speakers, or a close facsimilie. IIRC, they have an 8" whizzer and a T35 tweeter, and don't sound all that hot. When the other speaker was a Georgian or a Patrician, the second speaker didn't really matter. No bass to speak of, and a pair might sell for $100 to $150.

In the pool of vintage speakers, and bad vintage speakers, these fall as close to bad vintage speakers as anything that EV ever made.

Oops, I was wrong. These are Stereons, with the T35(0) and T25. Now I know why the bass is nonexistent, because this model does not have the 8" whizzer sidemounted like I remember. I have the identical one, here is the cut sheet.

And looking at your photo, this is one of the later Stereons, or modded like my friend's version of 30 years ago. That one does have the 8" whizzer, from the look of things. Gotta love these midcentury kits...

That's a Electro-Voice Stereon. :thumbsup:

Whoops I guess I didn't read the whole thread

After your reply helping me hone in on it, I think it is the Coronet model and not the Stereon. The Stereon is a little narrower than the Coronet and that what the photo shows.

Electro Voice Coronet Specs:
  • Electro Voice Model X36 Crossover Network, 3500CPS, 16 ohms;
  • 8" Electro Voice SP8B speaker, 16 ohm;
  • Electro Voice T35B Horn, 16 ohm.

Here is a picture of the Coronet that I gleaned from the net.

Either a Coronet or a Stereon. Need to get in the same room with it to be sure.
Pair of Coronet enclosures here, as a matter of fact. I loaded 'em with a pair of LS8 twincones. Kind of nice, actually.

Mostly going for the vinyl they also have for sale. I will decide on the speakers based on the price.

I would wager that the Stereon split and was rebranded as either a Stereon(without the 8" whizzer) or a Coronet(with the 8" whizzer) starting in 1959. Judging from the stickers on mine, it is a 1956 model. My friend's unit from way back had the right lower cavity side mounted 8" whizzer with a bent board to diffract it to the front, so it was probably a Stereon that was home modded.

The wild thing is EV is as common as you can get for existing 1950s speakers, yet we collectively have hardly ever seen a Regal, Coronet, Carlton, or Duchess. History sometimes passes too fast.

Would the fact that there are two of them, point to them being later than the 50s, being used for stereo.

It might be that, or that the original owner lived in a 50s shoebox house, or he was cheap, and picked up the cheapest EV speakers one (or two) at a time. The Stereon was built solely as a satellite speaker, whereas the ones with the 8" whizzer could be a stand alone single or pair because it had a woofer.

Most of the time, these very narrow faced speakers were utilized by being shoved in right next to the TV at the shoulder or corner of a room. I have never seen one in its original home that was free standing, in the open. My EV guru always sniffed at these, and called them apartment speakers, for folks who rented or had a house under 1200 sq ft.

And if things aren't confusing enough Electro-Voice also sold a kit speaker called the "Coronet" that in no way resembles the one pictured above.

MHardy, I think I recognize those cabs. When I bought them years ago, they had a pair of Stephens Trusonics mounted in them. So when the OP goes to take a quick look, make sure you check inside the box, don't go by just the logo outside.

I didn't buy them. It was one of those sales were nothing is priced and when I inquired about them, I think he said he wanted 2 or 3 hundred. I told him good luck!

Thanks for the report and yikes to the seller, I guess he'll have a nice pair of end tables or kindling for the hearth this winter.
