AMT 1's alright, very good sounding speakers, get them if the price is right.
well, be quick about it. those heil tweeters are very well regarded.

But the guy that sold me my OHM Acoustics model ( i ) is selling the pair with the wood trimmed covers, I messaged him and he said they are quite awesome, he used to be a salesman at Tech HiFi late 70s early 80s and knows his stuff I would buy his if I had the money

Yeah. Lots of experience with ESS. Own them. Used to sell them new in the 70's. First pic looks like AMT 1's. 10 inch 2 way with full sized Heil in a ported enclosure.
Ones with the wood framed tapered grill are either AMT II's 10 inch with passive and great Heil or AMT1D's 12 inch with passive and great Heil. Hope these are a good price for you.

Thanks jcidave! That's some really helpful information...the very first picture posted is the ones I'll be looking at, I know the picture is not very clear, so I appreciate how much you can decipher from those pics, very impressive!

Thanks. Reason I said AMT 1's is the grill cloth looks black. A lot of the 1's used a black grill. The logos look horizontal. They used several different styles of logos. Some were vertical. Some were horizontal. If the grill cloth is brown and black tweed, then its likely the larger version of the 1 called the 1a or 1b, or 1c. These have a 12 inch cast frame woofer with a rear mounted passive. There were some variations in the crossover frequency and the woofer cone material.
Then there is a lower cost line called Tempest. There is another thread running now where a member picked up a Tempest Classic which is a 1 cabinet with a smaller version of the Heil called the dual plate version. Designed the same and works the same as the Great Heil, just smaller. So, these speakers could also be that.
Thing to remember is check the woofer surrounds. If they are intact, then they have been redone. None of the original woofer surrounds of this age have survived. If not intact, then you have a job ahead of you.
Look through the slots of the Heil. the pleats should be vertical and distinct. If they look compressed together, then there is damage. When the Heil is overdriven the pleats will melt together.
If that is the case, still no worries. Heil diaphragms are readily available for all sizes of the Heil and easy for the user to replace himself. Then its like new.
If there is any kind of damage like I've described, its a discussion point to lower the price. Hope you get em. Hope you like em.

Wow! Jcidave, that is a wealth of information that I will definitely use when I come across a set of ESS again. I ended up not getting the AMT's at the auction as they were pretty beat up on the bases and if course the surrounds were shot. There was one other guy who was interested in the audio lots, mainly the records and the AMT's. He kept saying before the auction that those AMT's needed a lot of work (obviously!) but I bid up to 2 bills and then I bowed out. But, I did snag a pair of AR3's in pretty good shape for a Hamilton, so I was pretty happy in the end.
