Rybeam, that was kind of what I was thinking, but hoping for something more exotic based on the base (like an Altec Valencia) but alas...it's looking Japanese

I'm not convinced at all that it's a speaker, and it's almost definitely not a Japanese made speaker cabinet, not with a pediment/feet like that.
It strikes me as a wine/liquor cabinet.
If the OP is able to obtain more info, hopefully they'll give us a follow up post.

Forget the background, ill take that Magnavox console as it most likely contains a single ended tube amp!

If it is a speaker, I'd say Sansui, don't some Sansui speakers have grills that are slightly bowed? It looks kind of like that to me.

They do indeed.
But, these have too much meat around the outside edges of the grill, and it appears the baffle would be deeply recessed which in most cases is poor speaker design.
All of the Japanese lattice grilled speakers that i'm aware of have grilles that come to within a panel thickness or so of the cabinet edge on all four sides. Akai made the one exception i can think of, the sw-155. Yet still, none of them have any kind of base, pediment, or feet. That's just not in the Japanese style of the era.

Looks to me to be a late 40's 78rpm console.
