Speaker options Yamaha C-4 and M-2 combo

Buy it - its always repairable . Its a great speaker you wont be sorry. Tweeter comes up often on ebay but a bit expensive. The speaker is an icon and an industry legend. I say buy it!! I have two pairs and a pair of NS 690. Yamaha speakers from that era are special and the NS 1000 very special.

So this weekend I again was phoned by a guy and he said that he had two sets of NS-1000M's which he bought new in 1979 :naughty:

He is getting old and his wife wanted those big black things out of the living room. So I went by his house last Saturday and man, he had a great nice pair of NS-1000M's standing there. Really near mint, only on small veneer chip on the under side. No dust on the drivers, nearly no scratches. Really amazing.

The second set was in worse state and definately needed a sandpaper and repaint. So the price he asked was more than reasonable: € 800,- for the near mint and € 600,- for the rough pair. I decided to go for the near mint pair. I didn't even negotiate the price, because the seller was a really nice guy and the price already was more than reasonable.

I loaded them in the car, drove home and connected them to my CR-800 (temporary main amp) and man, that sound. I have never heard anything like it. I've read tons of reviews, stories of owners, critics (too harsh, too bright, not much bass, etc), so my expectations were at a medium level. But they exceeded my expectations by far. Really an amazing sound and they blow away my NS-200M's in every way. Can't wait to have my C-4 / M-2 combo up and running with these beasts.

For the time being I placed them on concrete planters. While I will be searching for the perfect stands.

Some pictures:

Look great - try them on the stands you are using for the NS 200. You should have bought both sets then you have a spare set of drivers and all the other stuff (crossovers, L-Pads etc) for your speakers which are arguably one of the best speakers ever designed and built. I have mine on stands that are 48cm high playing across the room in a 6 X 4.5 m room. Get the busted pair if it is still available.

I wouldn't dare placing those top heavy units on those unstable stands. IMO to high and not stable enough. I'm very pleased with the current height of 25 cm's above the ground.

Mainly looking for something like this:

And I do not have enough storage room for the second pair ;-)

See stands I had made : NS-690 on 30cm stands (Atacama copy) and NS-1000 on 48cm stands in the background. Very stable design (50mm tubing) copied from Yamaha design made in England. "legs" filled with sand 20150610_125003.jpg

Yes you can find them on line - you order the size you want. Shipping will be cheaper for you as you are close or maybe you can drive over the channel and collect.

Yamaha NS1000 Stands
Bespoke-made stands for Yamaha NS1000 to original NS2000 pattern, but upgraded to all-steel construction and your choice of colour or height.

I'm agreeing what you already know. These speakers love terra firma, good solid and firm speakers stands. A few CM lower does reinforce the bass somewhat. Most 60-120 watt amps had my non-audiophile friends asking me "Where's the beef?" In wasn't until the M4 that I thought I was doing these speakers justice. I'd nail down the amp first and then work on speaker stand height. Jazzmuso speaker stands look fantastic, expensive but probably worth it.

I had a C-4/M-2 set up with a pair of ADS L1290 speakers for a while and I thought it was a great match. Of course I like the L1290s with about anything...

Yamaha NS1000 Stands

Wow, these are as expensive as one NS-1000M ;-) I think I made up my mind about the material though: wood.

The M-2 / C-4 are definitely keepers, so they better match up with the NS-1000M's!
