A couple of months ago, I advertised my Dahlquist DQM-9 speakers on CL. They still sounded wonderful but they loom so large and weigh 65 pounds each. Just too darn physically difficult to deal with them any more. I used to be able to carry them up and down the basement stairs! How the mighty have fallen.
So, a month went by. And no response to the ad. Then a listing for these B&W CDM1-SE speakers showed up. I remembered the rave review that came out in Stereophile in 2002. I really wanted to try them out. I asked the seller, want to trade? and he was willing. Out went the large Dahquists to his pickup truck and in came the much smaller B&Ws. He got a really good deal.
Although the speakers were dusty, they easily cleaned up and now they look like new. No scratches, even on the bottoms of the cabinets. Drivers in perfect condition. Supposedly one-owners, as well. (Original retail price was $1100.)
And the sound. The familiar British B&W signature sound that I have always appreciated, in a relatively compact, easy-to-carry cabinet. I call this speaker an all-rounder. It plays all kinds of music really well; not fussy, it just gets out of the way. They sold a lot of them, and for around $500 on the used market, they are a great deal. (The red ash and cherry stained cabinets are way more attractive than the black ones, IMHO.)
The REL T/5x subwoofer complements these speakers just about perfectly. This is high value high fidelity.
