Speakers for Classic Rock, Hard Rock, and Metal

I’ve been using PA speakers for rock. With some bass knob action and the loudness contour you can get them down in the 40hz range, which is perfect for rock. You want that mid bass slam that hits like a freight train. The Rolling Stones on loudspeakers that reach down into the 20hz range sounds asinine, all gooey.

Another Cerwin Vega vote here. I have a pair of D-3's I bought at a pawn shop many years ago, all I've ever had to do to them was re-foam the woofers. I would probably never sell them.

I recently bought a pair of JBL 2060's from Barter Town, I use them stacked on top of the CV's, driven by my Macintosh 6200, and the two really complement each other!

When my Sansui was up and running, the Cerwins sounded great with that one as well!

I'm currently looking for a set of bigger JBL's to use in my den.

By the way, I listen to a lot of different music, everything from classical to jazz to rock, but my main love is for classic rock from the 60's and 70's..For what you like to listen to, anything from Cerwins to Altecs to JBL's would work nicely. I really can't comment on stuff like Klipsch, as I don't have any experience with those.
Just get another pair of D3 and turn them upside down on top of the other ones = WALL OF SOUND !

I do something similar with my system..Kind of.

I have a P.A. in my music room with a 16 channel board and a BIG set of QMS speakers, and if I want a bit more "ambience" I have a pair of Shure SM-57's aimed slightly off-axis at my CV's, about five feet away, and a SM-58 I use for vocals..Turn that on while the stereo is cranked, and the overall effect is very cool!
