Speakers: "Manufactured For Sound Studios" Newark, Delaware

I found this speakers at a local thrift ship for dirt cheap. I couldn't resist getting them. If anything, restoring the cabs will be good refinishing practice. Has anyone ever heard of Sound Studios in Newark Delaware? I wish they would have included a "manufactured by" sticker ;) ..... If anyone has any thoughts, or knowledge on their origin, I'd love to hear it.

Super tweeter looks decent, the woofer voice coil seems to be on the small side though; I'd expect at least a 1.5" VC for a 12" woofer. Either way, Deoxit the pots and have a listen. If they seem like they have potential then I'd recap.
 
Well, I hooked them up last night and they sound really good. So I think I'll be fixing them up for the living room. Whoever assembled them painted over the manufacturers markings on the tweeter/super tweeter, so figuring out they are made of is going to be tough :/
 
Some Google image searching might find the answer, at least for the domes (the midranges and low tweeters are pretty generic). They're a somewhat unique configuration. But that's no guarantee that all the drivers are made by the same manufacturer, and it's extremely unlikely that the speaker manufacturer made the drivers as well.

For the woofers, you can see if there are any numbers stamped on the back of the cone.
 
I'd say these were manufactured for some department store chain. That mid looks like it has a date of 1998 on it. Not sure which stores would have been in the area at that time, and were big enough to have a house brand of audio. Scrubbed the internet for info and came up with nothing.

Well that's what I though too, but it does look like a date. Not much to go on. I also unsuccessfully searched for the logo as "M with laurel". I found a lot of logos that were similar but none that matched. Newark DE did have a lot of famous department stores that went out of business in the late 70's so I stick with my theory that these were store brand.
 
That M logo has to be identifiable...I looked on the list of defunct audio manufacturers and didn't find anyone suitable starting with M. But heck they could be still in business for all we know. Motorola, Magnavox...
 
Totally agree they were store brand, usually that meant some audio company made them, maybe even designed them, and used either their own drivers, or purchased them from someone else (CTS, etc.). So the M would be the driver manufacturer, possibly the speaker assembler, but not the store (apparently Sound Studios).
 
Riki, post that M logo pic in a new thread titled "Anyone recognize this driver manufacturer logo?" Include the pic and a link to this thread. I'm guessing around 1970 or so for the age. Someone may know. Kinda driving me nuts now. :D

BTW what do the crossovers look like? Usually pretty sparse on a house brand speaker, but not always.

If you look at more links you will also find them listed as a Dahlquist dealer in a 1977 Billboard magazine ad. I think you may have found the source.
 
As Tox said above, Sound Studio was an audio store in northern Delaware, I think they had three or four locations. There were at least two in Wilmington, I bought my Canton Karat 30's and an Adcom cd player in one of them. They also carried Nakamichi, and had the 600 stack on display. They were big on sub-sat two channel systems at the time. I spent a lot of time in those stores, but never once did I see a house brand speaker.

They look like Acoustiflex Speakers made in Detroit Michigan
Acoustiflex was the house brand of stereoland ..
Very early 70s
They used a lot of CTS...
Maybe the factory made these for this department store on the Eastern seaboard

How about a high-res closeup pic of the supertweeter, front and back (post on imgur.com and then embed; don't upload as an image)? Even if the logos have been painted over.
