Speakers with questionable "upgrades"... post your findings here.

You may be right, but often when pictures are downloaded from the net, it will say so. Since I didn't see any such note, I assumed Leesonic had the speakers and took the pictures.

Yeah, if those were mine, I would have got some original woofers from the 'Bay and refoamed them.
 
Those Kenwood LS P9200s (in their original form) look a lot like the speakers that I have mentioned several times in various threads as being the reason I no longer assume I know what will sound bad. I found them in a dumpster and was curious enough to blow a few bucks in Mat Electronic generic foam surrounds to get them up and running. I was surprised at how good they sounded, and when I heard them in the modest system I provided a friend, I was really stunned. Marvin Gaye sounded real - full sized and in the room.
I suspect the 'modifications' made to them have not improved them, though it does seem some effort was taken - an added port, which might be because the original was a passive radiator system, whereas the new drivers look like active ones and might need some pressure relief.
 
As far as the Kenwoods ? IDK.

Unless the goal is to shoot 50mm cannon ball projectiles out of those ports, I'm sure the "tuning" is far from ideal.

I also doubt it's ideal, but someone spent some effort (misguided as it might be) on it.
 
If these Pioneers had plastic trim rings for the woofers, then that's one thing. But if someone has cut a cast frame woofer to fit these woofers, that's questionable with a capital Q.

Fill the cabinet with styrofoam chips, play some bass heavy music, and you have yourself a snow machine. Possibly also a smoke machine when your amp pops driving a sub 2-ohm load.
 
It took me a moment to see what Leesonic is referring to, but whether the rings are plastic (in which case, why not put them on top of the new woofer's lip?) or it is metal and they removed enough of the woofer's guts to fit a new woofer in - maybe even sawing out the cast basket - some one went to a good deal of effort to do a bad job.
But who knows - maybe the new woofers sound excellent, even better than the originals? I doubt it, but the naysayers could be wrong. Maybe...
