I am setting up a second FM stereo system for cheap at other location. Which sounds best with an emphasis on reliability?

Pioneer SX 626 (Others report identical sound to the SX 990)
Harman Kardon HK 330C
Harman Kardon HK 430 Twin Power
Yamaha CR-820
Luxman R-1070
Luxman R-114

I dont see you going wrong with any of them, they are all good choices.

The Pioneer 626 and HK 330c are probably the most "tube like" in their sound signature. The HK 430 is a slight step up from the 330c offering more dynamic power but loosing some of the tube like warmth. Be aware that the Pioneer x2x series use special speaker connectors, make sure yours has got them.

The Yamaha and Luxman 1070 are probably the most neutral or natural sounding.

The Luxman R114 flies quietly under the radar. Decent tuner and a clean amp section with good power reserves.

Tough call, not a bum in the lot
 
What speakers are you planning to use? Your choice of speakers will (or should) influence your choice of receiver. The Yamaha that 68custom recommended might not be as good a match for a forward-sounding speaker as it would be for a speaker with more polite mids and highs.

I like the Harman-Kardon receivers from that era and still use my 330C from time to time. The Pioneer should also be worthy. As wmgwizard said, there's really not a bad choice in the lot.

I have some older Infinity bookshelf speakers (forgot number) with 6.5" woofer and 1" dome tweeter. I can upgrade later.

I'd go for the Luxman R-1070.I own a R-1050 which sounds just great (not quite up there with the Sansui Eight Deluxe,but not far behind).Think the high MRRP of the R-1070 was $799.00.
 
If you do get the HK turn all the knobs and press all the buttons while off on a weekly basis to keep the controls clean otherwise you can get pops when you use the buttons and noise when you first use the knobs. My Dad bought one new, it did it when new and later when I had it for a while. Wonderful sounding unit and sweet looking as well. By this age no doubt could use a deoxit treatment and possible service on dead caps, check for broken solder joints, etc. Same checkup should be done on any older unit.

Luxman followed by the HK. Nothing wrong with Yamaha or Pioneer- but IMO, clearly outclassed by the Luxman.
 
I picked up a Luxman R-113 a couple of months ago. It's the best BOTL receiver I've ever owned. I was rotating between a Pioneer SX-838, Sony STR-7065, Sansui 881 and a Nikko 8085 in my garage system. They've all got benched after about an hour of listening to the Luxman.
 
The Luxman R-1070 is a wonderful receiver and extremely reliable. Very sweet sound. That's got my vote.
 
Well, No Pix- Damaged & more- plus are they kidding me

Corner was tweaked that bent lower front control plate. Shipped in box with no padding anywhere.

The H&K 330C powers up. Now, how could this POS sounding receiver be rated so high? Are they kidding? A Sony V4 crushes this thing sonically. So does a Philips AH7851 and a baby Marantz 2216.
