Stand alone digital music player

Hi Guys,

My hifi equipment is a 1970's Sansui amp and Sony PST33 record player, i have burnt all my CD's to an SD card and wonder if there is a non portable digital music player on the market, so i can have my digital music play through my amp. I have tried hot-wiring an old mobile phone, but there are issues with the battery burning out if it is left plugged in all the time. I just want a digital player I can plug in and forget until i want to use it.

I've built a retro docking station for a mobile phone, but didn't realise a mobile phone battery burns out if it's left on charge....

Up until a few years ago, you could remove the battery from a laptop without opening the case,

I leave one plugged in with the battery all the time, though.

An old laptop loaded with Daphile, a free music OS, would work, and you can control it from your phone.

A few years ago you could buy a "Network Audio Player" from mainstream hifi brands such as Marantz, but this type of product has fallen out of favour, and is now difficult to find.

A good off-the-shelf option today would probably be the SMSL SD-9 (US$400) or Topping M50 + E30II DAC ($230 + $150).

Personally, I would forego the "standalone" concept, because I'm happy to use a phone or tablet as controller, and in this case all you need is a streamer, such as the highly regarded WiiM Mini - US$99.

Reviving an old thread. I archived all my LP's and CD's to WAV files, copied to a MicroSD card, bought a Topping M50 and a Schiit Modius DAC, inserted the MicroSD card into the M50, control the M50 with the HibyLink app on my phone, it works but so far not happy with audio quality. My Yamaha CD-S300 CD player sounds better, it's either the M50 or the Modius, leaning toward the issue being the Modius. Connected to a Kenwood KA-7100 amp and Boston Acoustics T-1000 speakers.
