Stand alone digital music player

Sounds like I need to get a different digital media player? A shame because the M50 features are exactly what I was looking for, if only it sounded good.

For comparison I connected my laptop directly to the Modius with USB-C, playing music sounded like it did when playing from the M50. I have an A-B switch so was able to listen to a comparison of the M50, my laptop, and Yamaha CD-S300 CD player. The CD player sounds best, and when playing from either the M50 or laptop the volume has to be increased 3 clicks on the amp to achieve the same level of loudness, but even at the same level of loudness the CD player sounds better. So to summarize, the M50 and laptop sounded the same, so it appears that the DAC is the difference, not the M50.

Looks like I will be upgrading to a Schiit Gungnir with multibit upgrade and Unison USB. Hopefully this will give the increased SQ I am looking for. Fingers crossed.

If I am going to upgrade the DAC to something really nice, like a Gungnir or Yggydrasil, I would use my CD player as a transport and connect the Topping M50 but what about running the tuner through it as well? Does anybody run their tuner through a DAC?

Does anybody run their tuner through a DAC?
A digital tuner (e.g. DAB or internet radio)?

Otherwise, no: what is the point of taking analogue, through an ADC to digital, and through a DAC back to analogue? Unless you want to do digital EQ or room correction.

I am referring to an AM-FM tuner, I have a Kenwood KT-5500

Then my comments re. unnecessary analogue - ADC - DAC - analogue conversion apply.

What do you hope to gain by running your analogue output tuner through a DAC? You do understand what a DAC does?
Yes, I understand what a DAC does, was not thinking I guess.
